I just got a Strymon DIG last night and noticed that when I placed the Crown Jewel in front of the DIG there was a lot of what I can only describe as "white" noise. The noise happened when the DIG was engaged and the Crown Jewel had power. I did some investigation and figured out, as far as I can tell, that it happens only when the DIG is in ADM mode with the Crown Jewel in front of it. Researched a little more and read about how some Strymon pedals have issues with pedals that have charge pumps.

Anyone know if there is a way to either filter or quiet things down beside putting the DIG in another mode beside ADM or into my amps effect loop? :?:

No answers for you, but you should be able to confirm if the CJ's charge pump is the culprit by pulling the 7660 IC out of the pedal. The pedal's +9V functionality is not affected....

Glad someone could point me to how to test! I will try this out when I get home tonight. Thanks so much!

So I pulled out 7660 and the noise was gone. So should I just run the CJ without the 7660? Does it affect anything beside the 9v/18v switch or the boosts? Try other ICs?

You will just lose the 18V functionality on the overdrive side, and any of the modules that require the +18V or -9v outputs of the charge pump (18V JFET, 27V, and Treble boosts).

I don't know if it will help, but I prefer THESE over other charge pumps. They cost a bit more than the more common varieties, but perform more robustly. I've never had any noise issues with them. Might be worth a try.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately there are no electronics shops out here in Hawaii that carry this. Mouser shipping is $8 for a $2.64 part. *sigh*

I'll need to figure out if I need to order any other items before pulling the trigger on this.

If you ever have something from us going your way, let us know and we'll throw one in. We're actually switching over to the 1054 in the next revision of the Crown Jewel. Not because there's anything wrong with the 7660, but we're releasing a dry blend add-on board that needs 18v and it's too much current draw for the 7660.

FYI, for those of you that already have the Rev1.0, don't worry....there's nothing new coming out with Rev1.1 that you won't have. We're switching to the 1054 for more current and 1N5817 diodes for a little more voltage. Both of those things you can simply swap out, but unless you're planning on adding the dry blend board, I wouldn't bother. Rev1.1 will have some off-board wiring eyelets to make it a little easier to add the dry blend board, it's nothing you can't tack onto Rev1.0 though. In the instructions, we'll recommend that a few of the components be mounted on the underside of the main PCB right out of the gate to give adequate clearance for the add-on board. So there will be a 3 or 4 things you may have to desolder and move to the bottom of the PCB on Rev1.0 to make room for the add-on board.

Thanks Keith! I was about to place an order for some add ons boards today. How do I let you know before placing the order?

I cleaned up the charge pump noise in mine. Works fine with 7660 or 1054. Description of the fix over here: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=55062#p473726

The comment box works well, or you can just reply to your confirmation email. Just say that Keith said to throw in a 1054.

Thanks for the tips. The method we're currently using is fairly tried and true. It's the same set up that is used in the Klon. We haven't had anyone complain about noise coming from the charge pump yet that I'm aware of, other than you and this thread. This was more a problem with the Strymon and not the Crown Jewel. Not sure why yours was giving you trouble. I do know that it is very important that you use a charge pump with the SCPA suffix. Other charge pumps will cause HF noise. But the 7660SCPA seems to work well without needing any special considerations. Anyhow...if we come across this again, we'll know how to deal with it.

Just wanted to report back that the 1054 solved the noise issue between the two pedals! That was a very easy fix. Thank you so much duhvoodooman, Keith and company!

Now I have 3 new modules to build for more fun.
