around 2008 i ordered and put together a large beaver fuzz that turned out to be the best sounding fuzz i’ve ever played. i’ve since lent it to a friend and will never see it again. i want to build another, but there are more options now and i don’t know which one is the right one. if i remember correctly there used to be just one large beaver back then. can anyone tell me which one that is now? thanks!

That depends upon which version you built from the 2008 kit. It offered three options: Triangle, Ram's Head and "Pickled Beaver", which required specialty additional parts to be ordered along with the kit. The vast majority of customers went with one of the first two; do you remember which one you built? If so, just order that version of the new kit. There are some differences with the "bells & whistles" between the two generations, but you'll find the basic character of the tone to be the same. If you like a fuller sound with more available gain, that's the Triangle. If you prefer a bit less gain and a more scooped tone, the Ram's Head will be more to your liking.

thanks for the replies y'all. i wish i could remember which one it was. i could have sworn there was only one back then. the one thing i specifically remember about it was that it was the one fuzz i've plugged in that did not chop my low-end when used with my amp's distortion, and seemed to almost boost it.
if you're saying most people ordered the triangle one, i'm gonna assume that's what i went with.
thanks again!

There was; it's just that it could be built to the specs of different versions by changing certain component values. I think you're on the right track, though, and I'm sure you'll love the pedal!

If you don't, just post here and we may be able to help you modify it for different results.

build it again with the swappable component locations using individual sockets. That way you can exchange the components and find the one you built originally...

The first release of the BYOC Large Beaver (2006) was a "v.2 Triangle" clone. Instructions for that kit are HERE in the BYOC instruction archive. The second iteration (2008; instuctions HERE) was the one that could be built to one of three versions, as I mentioned in my original response in this thread. Actually, you could build one of TWO versions of the Triangle, the "v.1" and the slightly lower gain "v.2", which differed only by two resistors of higher value that control the gain factor of the first and third transistor stages, and slightly different transistors.

That takes a LOT of sockets, since most of the component values are different between the Triangle and Ram's Head versions.

Right but you could then have a platform for experimenting as well. Hmmm...

assemble it again with the swappable segment areas utilizing singular attachments. That way you can trade the segments and locate the one you assembled initially...
