That's certainly possible, as the circuit contains two transistors. However, they both function as unity gain buffers, one for the input and one for the output. Installing sockets for them makes it easy to replace one, if it fails; it doesn't change the
function of the pedal in any way. So in that sense, I'd consider it a convenience feature, not really a "modification" per se.
