My guitar tech put a BYOC Classic Overdrive together for me with a mod or two. the main one he did apart from the asymmetrical clipping y'all suggest is that he put sockets in for the transistors, just in case those fry.

Are you sure you didn't mean diodes rather than transistors? Though it's possible to use some types of transistors as signal clippers, diodes are much more commonly used for this purpose.
