I imagine that this must be pretty simple. Anyone have any idea as to how I can add such an input?

Thanks!

It's a simple concept. You are just running a long wire outside of the enclosure to a rate pot that's inside a rocker pedal. But physically implementing it is not as easy.

You'll need to add another jack to the pedal. You'll want to use a disconnect jack like the "marshall" style jacks some people use and wire it so that it disconnects the rate knob on the pedal and routes that signal to the expression pedal.

Fortunately the rate knob for this pedal is extremely simple. It only use two of the 3 lugs and one just goes to ground. So you can use a standard instrument cable for this.

i used an old Ernie Ball volume to add an external rate for my phaser. i used a DPDT switch on the pedal to have the option of selecting the rate knob on the box, or the external. i used a 1/8" stereo jack (like for headphones) on both the phase and the ernie ball. the ernie ball has an additional pot on the side, which is perfect so i can set the maximum rate. all the way up, for me, is too fast.

How would I wire this?

Oh yeah: I will be using a Boss Expression pedal which has the stereo 1/4" plug. I;m not sure what should be wired where on the stereo input jack.

Can you use an expression pedal in place of any pot just by moving the pot to the expression pedal? What I mean is, does the length of cable going to that external pot matter at all? Or can you literally run long runs of cable to an external pot in place of any pot on any circuit with no modifications to the circuit?

Reason I'm wondering about this is because typically when you run audio cables for long distances like in a guitar rig I know you need a buffer, but is in the same within the circuit of an effect when running long distances?

The rate pot is not in the audio path, so that's not an issue here.

The rate pot is 100k, so you'll need to find a volume pedal or expression pedal with a 100k pot, or mod one. I believe the Boss EV-5 pedal is 20k... or 10k, I don't remember.
