I'm building a Yellow Overdrive and plan on putting in some sockets for the clipping diodes to try the LED mod and other clipping items.

Looking at the schematic (noob style) I see three diodes D1 D2 D3 on the drive stage; two in series with one parallel. The Yellow Overdrive page says we can put two LED's in place of the clipping diodes etc.

My question is, which diodes are the clipping diodes if there are three in the schematic, and we only use two LED's for replacement?

Thanks for helping with my lack of knowledge in this area.

D1 and D2 are in series, meaning the anode of one is connected to the cathode of the other, essentially creating one single diode that still has an anode and a cathode, with a forward voltage that is a sum of the forward voltages of both D1 and D2. This is how you get asymmetrical clipping - D3's forward voltage is only half of the combined forward voltage of D1 and D2 in series. So while you have 3 diodes, there are really only 2 diodes as far as the circuit is concerned.

So to use LEDs instead, you would insert one LED into the D3 space. The longer lead of the LED goes in the square hole. The shorter lead goes in the round hole. Then do the same for the second LED, only you are putting the long lead in the square hole of D1 and the shorter lead in the round hole of D2.

Thanks Keith you da man! Pedal works great, and it's cool to have the ability to easily experiment with components to hear the clipping changes with different items. I'm trying yellow LEDs first...

Thanks for the asymmetrical clipping explanation. Since the mod LEDs are same value parallel, does this mean clipping is now symmetrical? Just trying to follow the logic, this mod has been educational.

I'm also building a Lil Yellow OD and found the clipping diodes in the circuit because it's very close to the "big" Yellow OD. I'll probably just put a couple of reds LEDs in there and call it a day because of the tight space.

Exactly.
