Here are a few of the places I regularly scout for gear. These are surplus suppliers, so you have to check in periodically to see what's new. These places often have some very cool transistors and diodes (NOS even) that you won't find at Smallbear or other pedal parts sellers. And talk about cool looking capacitors! (just pay attention to the voltage ratings so you don't end up with fist-sized caps)

I LOVE fist sized caps!! ;)

Seriously, thanks for the lists. And, not sure where they're located, but I know lots of folks in the UK have ordered from banzai.

I got 2,000 metal film resistors on ebay from ebay store= sureelectronics. 50 different values. They were like $8 Also got 100 5mm leds for $5.

The resistor leads are a little thin, but still seem to be strong. Many resistors look like they have 22 gauge lead and these look like 24 guage, which should not matter much.

Ordered some pots from Musikding at the weekend and they arrived today. Banzai have a lot of good stuff but it can take about a fortnight from ordering to finally receiving the goods, so from now on I think Musikding is my main port of call for pots.

I would, of course, order from the UK if anyone sold the pots that Musikding and Banzai do

In other news, I order some mono jack sockets from a UK supplier on Sunday and received confirmation that the order was completed on Monday. I'm still waiting for them to arrive. I only ordered them from this supplier because I wanted them urgently and figured a UK supplier would be quicker. I should have got them from the efficient Germans!

I just got into all this DIY stuff and am having a tough time sourcing parts in Toronto. Electrosonic and Sayal aren't bad, but finding switches and enclosures (the latter can be found, but not for a good price) is next to impossible. Anyone no of anywhere worth looking into? Thanks!

Which one is the one on Queen Street West? I loved that place but I don't remember seeing enclosures / switches. There must be some good places somewhere in Tdot...

Ahh, that's Active Surplus. I've been meaning to check there. It's just the enclosures and switches that are tough to get a hold off...

There will definitely be a supplier for Hammond Manufacturing in Toronto but the 3PDT switches will have to ordered online, you might get lucky and find DPDT but it seems no one in Canada has 3PDT.

The hammond distributors for Canada are here: http://www.hammondmfg.com/cregion.htm

There are a bunch in Toronto.

That's awesome. Thanks for the link. I've been to a couple of the local distributors recently to no avail, but it's good to know they carry the enclosures if I'm in a pinch. So far it seems Pedal Parts Plus has the best prices though.

You've got me jazzed to check out Active Surplus to see what treasures I can find! Think I'll walk there this afternoon.

Well, they sure had a lot of stuff that probably would have been useful if I'd known what I was looking for.

I ended up grabbing a cheap multimeter, a breadboard, some perfboard, a small vector board (not sure if I can even use this!) and some other random parts I thought might be useful.

Now I'm just placing an order with Mouser and Pedal Parts Plus to get started. I've got some BYOC kits on the way too (250+ and Phaser).

Which enclosures do people suggest? For the sake of a smaller footprint I was thinking 1590A (especially for 1 switch/1 knob pedals--Mosfet Boost maybe?), but I suppose 1590B is best?

Mail order parts sources in the Netherlands ... (also interesting if you're located in Belgium)

Newtone: http://www.newtone-online.nl/catalog/
great service, very rapid, very accurate, stocks parts specifically for pedal building (this is my nr. 1 supplier)
Haje: http://www.haje.nl/
general electronics supplier, not much experience with them yet, so far a bit slow and sometimes sloppy, but more choice than Newtone (e.g., Hammond 1590N enclosure, and electrolytic caps in all voltages).
Okaphone: http://www.okaphone.nl/
general electronics supplier, rather slow but stocks some items that are useful (e.g., spare parts for my soldering station).

If these guys don't have the item I want, I turn to Banzai in Germany (http://banzai-effects.de/), but my experience with them is not so positive; very slow (usually takes several weeks for something to arrive, but longer when something is not in stock, which they only tell you AFTER you have paid), expensive shipping, and they always mess something up (missing item or wrong item). After some emails, they will correct their mistakes without further hassle, but still its a PITA.

I read about this place from someone who posted about it on this forum a couple of weeks ago:

A-1 Electronic Parts
196 NORTH QUEEN STREET. tel: 416-255-0343. M9C 4Y1. TORONTO.
http://www.a1parts.com

They probably have what you are looking for.

I just found http://www.web-tronics.com out of Mesa, AZ. They had some decent prices, but not a whole lot of stuff - I ended up ordering some of their $3.99 enclosures to see if they were decent quality or not. They did ship it same day which was nice.

Oh yeah, and I haven't seen http://www.newark.com mentioned. I usually see some good deals on diodes and film caps there, plus they ship very fast.

This place is in the UK. I found it last week. The shop is not really a shop as such... just two massive rooms and a few shelves with cr4p on them. Behind the counters, every inch of wall space is occupied by tiny little drawers, each with a specific component inside. They are well priced (I think?), staff are fairly friendly (considering they're employed for their nerd credentials rather than their customer service skills) and they have an online store. They don't have everything you might need but a lot of it is there. The shop itself could be considered a pain in the 4rse to get to but I found it well worth it.

I've been to A-1 in Toronto and they have quite a lot of stuff, but it's mostly in piles everywhere. It's the Sanford & Son of electronics surplus. There's just stuff everywhere that you have to sift through, but you can find some good items. They do have some stuff organized like pots, knobs jacks, LEDs, switches etc. Their website has a lot of info, although there's no guarantee about stock.

They have a big selection of pots in various values, tapers and multi-gang configurations (no Alpha or CTS though). They have DPDT switches, but they are expensive and look like Taiwan X-Wing. I didn't see any 3PDT switches. They've got lots of Hammond enclosures.

I'd say their prices are average for the most part and a little on the high side for some items. I'll definitely go back to sift again.

Sayal has a lot of items, but you'll pay for the convenience. They are one of the only locals to have metal film resistors.

Honson Computer on College just West of Spadina (inside Home Hardware) has a very organized selection of resistors, capacitors, transistors, IC's, diodes, pots and some other items. No enclosures that I saw. Good prices on components and 1% Carbon film resistors.

I still can't find any local sources for Alpha & CTS pots, switchcraft jacks, good DC jacks & 3PDT switches. It still comes down to ordering from multiple sources to find all the stuff you need. :?

As for ordering online, I'm new to DIY effects and I've only ordered once from Pedal Parts Plus. Shipping seems to be $19 US to Canada regardless of what you get.

Tubedepot.com has Alpha & CTS pots at decent (but not the best) prices. They also have Carling DPDT switches for $8.95. Not to mention a lot of boutique components and I got a shipping quote of $6.95 US, so I'll probably place an order to try them out.

In case any one is interested, I am beginning to stock a lot of the hard to find pedal parts right here in Canada. That means quicker delivery and no surprise freight and/or customs fees. I have 3PDT switches, DC Jacks, Alpha pots, 125 enclosures etc. I ship Xpresspost for 2-4 day delivery and $100.00 insurance included for around $16.00

i stumbled upon a good electronics supplier a couple months ago. not a great variety for pedals but some stuff is cheap. resistors and a lot of ceramic caps are a penny a piece, and a lot of ic`s are cheap, like pt 2399`s for 50 cents. it is TAYDA electronics and they are out of thailand. dont let this worry you. i have ordered 3 times and the shipping is actually more reasonable than a lot of u.s. sellers and i have gotten my orders in a week and couple days, 10 days tops. hope this helps someone. will

Anyone knows where i can get suitable resistors in Australia for my OD2? I screwed one of the 1k and the mosfet mod came with 2 1m's without any 4.7k.

Would "Dick Smith" or "Jaycar" parts be compatible?
Here's the link for it:
http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID ... rm=KEYWORD
http://search.dse.com.au/search?w=1k+re ... 6a9&ts=new
http://search.dse.com.au/search?w=4k7+r ... 6a9&ts=new

The 2nd and 3rd own are the 1k and 4.7k but doesn't have the same color label? Do i have to get the ones with the same color label?
Does it matter?

Thanks guys your help would be greatly appreciated...
This is my 1st pedal to build by the way...

The resistors that come with the kit are 1% tolerance 1/4 watt metal film types. If you want to keep all the resistors the same get some of those.
