If I head down to my local electronics shop and ask the for
1X 150ohm resistor
2X 820ohm resistor

6X 0.1uf film capacitors

etc etc etc

and use those parts to build a clone.

Will it be
A. equal in quality to a pedal built froma complete byoc kit?
B. Cheaper?

Thanks all for any input

Regards

Ben

You could try and price it before starting. The electronic components aren't so expensive, its the switches and enclosure that bump the cost. Factor in drilling the enclosure, not too difficult but easier if you've got a workshop to use rather than a kitchen table. You may find that your local retailer hasn't got all the parts, necessitating shipping them from elsewhere at cost. After sourcing parts for a few boards myself I don't know that I can be bothered with the pain and suffering again. I suggest you put together a spreadsheet to do a bill of materials before ordering, which should give you an idea of what you are getting into.

Sourcing your own can work out if you're really well prepared. I would go to the local electronics store and make sure they have everything you need in one place. Like TU said the jacks, pots, switches, and enclosures are the expensive part. That and places like Mouser that have minimum quantities for ordering. I think most people have found that sourcing works out if you're making a lot of one pedal, or at least a lot of pedals all at once... Then you can buy a lot of your stuff in quantity and save that way, as well as combining shipping costs (where needed) etc. I know I had a lot of trouble sourcing parts to make two screamers, and I had a lot of the stuff already.
