Would this work? I am just thinking of creative housing ideas, and I have yet to see someone with a hollowed out piece of wood, or any sort of cut/sawed material? Are there technical barriers to this, and if so, how can these snafus be avoided?

it can be done, but you'd have to coat the inside with aluminum foil or something to create shielding from outside frequencies. It's as a rule just better to use a metal enclosure as it shields outside frequencies (example. radio frequencies)
