My friend was asking me about the possibility of doing some built-in effects (probably a Phase 90 and some kind of distortion) on his pedal steel. I took a quick look and it seems like there's room on the bottom for PCB's and such.

The issue would be trying to mount controls (pots and probably a toggle for bypass) on the top for him. I'd have to go back and measure the panel for its exact thickness, but it's definitely too thick for normal pots/switches. So I was wondering if anyone knows a good source for pots and toggles with extra long shanks. Kind like this: http://www.acehardware.com/product/inde ... pla_997453 but, ya know, more suitable for effects use.

I've done the normal Googling and Ebay searching, without a lot of luck so far. Any tips would be appreciated.

If your local Radio Shack still has any DIY parts bins, those are actually a great source for pots and switches with ridiculously long shafts.

Yeah, I thought of that at first, too. But I'd actually need the threaded part to be extra-long, as opposed to just the shaft.

Bit more digging turned up this: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/produc ... Shaft.html
I wonder if I could us the switch part to wire up bypass? Not sure how the terminals on a push-pull are configured exactly...

The switch on that pot is a DPTP.

Probably not what you are looking for unless you are advanced enough to implement a Millenium Bypass or something similar.

A little light reading on switches <<link

Typical True Bypass wiring diagram <<link

Did you mean DPDT? In which case, something like this would work: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf ... _tb_gi.pdf since I don't think we were going to try and have an LED anyway.

Yes - I meant DPDT.

Yes, the diagram you linked will work with a DPDT switch.

Please note that pot mounted switch is NOT a toggle switch. Meaning your friend will have to reach down and pull the knob at least half the time.

Well, he did say he'd be happy to pay for the work, but we hadn't discussed terms;)

But, yeah, a proper toggle would be preferable (just generally, and because it'd provide a visual indicator of "effect on/off" without needing an LED). Just need to find one that's DPDT at least, and has the extra-long shank/collar/thready bit, whatever the proper term is;) The search continues...
