I want to put some Teisco style Gold Foil pickups in a project I am slowly finishing. Problem is, Lollars are $180 each  and vintage ebay ones are $100+ each and are risky quality-wise. Anyone know of some other Gold Foil pickup makers?

Don't know if this UK outfit ships to the US, but looks like their current price for a single gold foil humbucker is about $108 USD, and for a Teisco repro, about $133: http://www.mojopickups.co.uk/gold_foils.php

Sorry, I know this doesn't answer you question. I haven't had any luck finding anyone that builds repros for cheap. I think machining the cover is the problem. But if you watch eBay carefully and patiently, you can find some at auction selling for around 50-80. I've been wanting to put one in the neck position of my tele.

The part that sucks is that last week Premier Guitar ran an article on overlooked pickups and the Teisco Gold Foils were in there. Now I think we are seeing a little run on them. I figure at some point something will come up. I actually quietly hope that GFS will make one. They have some cool surface mount NYII pickups, but I'm not looking for more P90 sounds.

Jay doesn't miss much, so I'll bet they already have something cooking.

So I emailed that guy on ebay and he sent me a response about Goldfoils that was basically full of Sh*t. He was telling me that they are just standard cheep single coil bar magnet pickups and that there is nothing really special about them and that his are ceramic bar magnet single coils. I was basically trying to sell me a re-covered single coil pup. Yup.
As for the GFS pups…I have not tried them (I ended up finding a funky old pickup that is really cool for my project and paired it with a GFS Loudmouth bucker. I doubt I will go the GFS route for the pickup at this point since the guitar is not routed at the neck for Humbucker. But I would love to hear what people have to say about them.
FWIW: I really like many of the GFS pickups. My favorite Humbuckers and Tele pups though are RHfactor pups (find them on Reranch). I have used Dimarzio's with little luck and same with Duncan. Oddly have a set of Dragonfire Screamers that sound killer in my 80's shred machine, but the same set sounds like poo in my LP copy. I really believe that the relationship between wood and pickups is huge. The 80's guitar is Ash, the LP is mahogany.
Wow…that took a tangent.

The one who wrote the post in guitarmagedon's link. He sells his "copies" of gold foils on eBay for cheap.

Oh, really? :?
Sorry for the bum steer fellas. I just found that page interesting because I wanted to know what makes those PUPs tick.
I'll probably give a couple of those GF one's a fly sometime after X-mas though.

No, not affiliated with GFS or Guitar Fetish. Just happened to notice those gold foil pickups last week while browsing. I used some of their Minitron pickups on a custom Rickenbacker-styled custom build I did about a year ago, and was very happy with them. I keep any eye on their Retrotron pickup collection since they're so "Gretschy" and "Rickenbackery", just like me.

Right on. Curious as to what I'm going to find when I open one up. Is it a ton of wire wrapped around a bar magnet, or is it going to be a p90 under there...

Thanks for the tip on the minitrons. Hadn't seen those.

I just got a GFS gold foil for my Melody Maker (bridge). To me it looks like a P90 with decorative gold lattice metal sticker on the top of the bobbin, and extra holes drilled in the pickup cover. Now, I didn't pull it apart completely to see how the wire is wrapped around the bobbin, but from the outside, it looks to me like a P90 with lipstick on.

But it sounds good to me. 8)

Here's a pic with the cover off:

If I can find some kind of similar material but in silver or chrome, I'm going to change it out on mine to match the hardware of the Melody Maker.

Does it sound any different from the stock pickup? Which one did you order? The single coil or the humbucker?

I'm going to wade out into a technical area I really know nothing about, so forgive me if I've got some tech facts mixed up. I was reading (caveat: may have been on TGP) that in the case of the GFS Gold Foils, it's only the humbucker sized ones that are set up to actually function like a "real" Teisco Gold Foil where the magnets are separate from the coil.

Interesting. I ordered a gfs single coil "gold foil" and it is a p-90. Nothing to do with Tiesco style construction. But is a weak p-90 and I like it better in the neck position in my tele than my vintage style p90 I had in there. I have some real gold fools in hand and plan to do a comparison once I get around to routing the guitar.

Let us know how it turns out, I was interested in a set of the p-90 sizes for my Electromatic.
