First of all sorry if this topic has already been covered but I could not find anything in my search.

Looking for some BC549c to complete a Green Muff project I'm working on. I found these guys on ebay that are selling 100 of them for 3 bucks:

Any body ever bought from that particular supplier? Price seems too good to be true so I'm a little hesitant

Haven't used THAT particular vendor, but I have had decent results with bulk purchases from Asian sellers.

The BC549C has more gain than a typical muff circuit can handle (I think I read anything above 350HFE is lost in the gain structure).

I have a TON of 2N2088 that I have tested that are throwing 400+ HFE if you are interested.

They tested too high for one of my common builds.

Chris

Thanks Chris...I actually have a bunch of 2n5088's as well. I'm building up the Guitar PCB Muff'n build to Green Russian specs and it listed the BC549C in the BOM

I remembered reading a thread over on the madbean site that said the BC549's were a favorite for a few builders over there so I guess that just stuck with me.

Maybe I should just socket the 2n5088's and then if I want to get some of the others later I can swap them out.

I would try that. The pinouts of the 549 and the 2088 are mirror of each other, so just orient opposite and you are good to go.

I'd just buy the BC549c from Mouser. They will be more than $3, but you'll know they are legit.

Well, yea, but..................

We're talking 'bout NPN trannies, not BBDs.

True, but I've gotten wonky trannies from Tayda before of parts that aren't rare. Some of the cheap China parts may not be fake, but they could be out of spec rejects.

Agreed. I remember some years back when the Gruntbox was the rage and everyone was building Muff derivatives. I think it was CJ that pointed out it an extremeyly hard circuit to screw up!

I rarely get anything from Tayda anymore. The are kinda the Dollar Store for electronics.

These are legit, although they will cost you a bit more:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/360181466396

He also has BC550Cs and quite a few other popular ones for our kind of builds, and as the postage doesn't increase too dramatically you'll save more on the unit price if you stock up a bit or maybe share an order between a few locals.

I've still got quite a few BC549C from the Magoda stash, happy to send you some. Got some 550 too.
They do sound great in a Muff, although FWIW, I've really been digging really low (70-100) gain trannies in them lately.

Hey Ben, how much do you have to tweak the biasing of the trannies to run those?

I know that from the Sovtek site about the BMP Gain Factor, one should be able to have the same gain factory through out a muff even if using super low hFe trannies, but have'nt got at it in a practical manner yet.

I have a bunch of 2SK1923 wich are by far my favored low gain NPN (80-150).... would be killer to use those. :)

Not at all!
From memory, I used rams head specs and 2N3903 (50-200hfe) recently.
I've put all sorts of trannies in muffs, even some Russian pnp ge ones without having to modify the bias...now you got me thinking I should check them.

Thanks for all the input dudes. Went ahead with the 2n5088s

I'm sure I will be building another one before too long and might do some more experimenting.
