Hello, all!

Couple months ago I tried building a PMBC, but I couldn't get a hold of VTL5C2 opto-couplers, so I cowboyed around on the internets and got a pair of Macron MI1210CLD-R photo-couplers instead.

The result? The pedal compresses VERY slowly and squishes the signal an obscene/unusable amount and occasionally makes a sound like a missile falling from the sky (I can't reliably replicate the effect, however). The knobs don't seem to be acting quite right (they're making a difference, but not in ways I can clearly discern).

My question is this: before I go pulling this thing apart and post pictures to show you all what malpractice I may have committed, is the MI1210CLD-R photo-coupler a suitable replacement for the VTL5C2? If not, is there an alternative out there?

If I've used components that should in fact work as intended, I'll follow up with pics. Thanks!

It should work with the MI1210CLD-R.

Fixed it! Amazing what 3 years can do when you revisit something.

Blobby solder joint on the high compression knob was touching something else; just filed down the short.

Yeah, stepping away for a while can really help. Now, THREE YEARS seems like kind of a long hiatus, but, hey, it worked! Congrats & enjoy the new (?) pedal!!

Inside scoop: pandemic over (to me at least) and it looks like my wife and I will be doing some acoustic gigs, so now the pedal that was just cool and a curiosity before has a mission!
