No sound.

However, when I take the guts out of the chassis, and thus disconnect the ground between jacks, I get sound, but no effect, though the tone does change slightly when switched on and off.

The LED throbs with the rate, and if I turn the blend pot wide open, it kills the volume. Apart from that, the other pots do nothing

This is my third BYOC build.

It’s hard to discern from the photos, but it looks like you have leads backwards on your output jack. It looks like you have the wire from the footswitch going to the sleeve connection, and the ground wire from the pcb going to the jack tip. Try switching them.

Thanks.

I swapped them and now get sound, even without the ground jumper (it's still out of the chassis.) But still no effect. The LED rate changes with the rate pot, and the blend still kills volume at wide open. The tone still changes slightly between bypassed and engaged. I've tried both battery and DC power source--same result.

I'd go through this process next: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=52188

I agree - remove the chips from their sockets first.

Ok. I took the board out, removed the pots. I checked everything, including resistor values. I reflowed all the solder joists, checked and rechecked for any unintended contact between joints. Reassembled, and still have no effect.

Regarding the out jack--in the intructions it looks like pin 8 of the switch goes to the out sleeve and the wire coming off the lower right of the board goes to the tip--is that correct?

Thanks all.

Yes that's correct, but no it's not correct. That was a mistake on our part. I fixed it to show how it's supposed to be wired. The PCB eyelet will go to the sleeve connection (ground), and the footswitch will go to the tip.

Thanks. I have the out jack correct and still no effect.

Some of the back-side soldering is worrying me. When the leads are bent before soldering, there is a greater chance of shorts. Be sure nothing is touching on the back-side, even if there is a trace, you want the trimmed leads to be as close to the PCB as possible.

Also, do you have a signal tester? (https://buildyourownclone.com/products/signaltester)

I have a digital multitester.

By the way, I’ve built dozens of amps from scratch. I’m certainly no electronics a genius though, and this is only my third though. I am usually pretty good at following a cartoon, and my soldering iron is clean and pointy!

I checked pretty carefully for stray solder on the back side.

It's never a bad idea to recheck everything when an effect doesn't work. The highlighted areas in the image below are what I'm talking about. It's not that your soldering is bad or anything, just that from the angle of the picture, it seems that there are a couple places where potential issues can happen.

Also check behind the pots. Just in case.

Yeah, I saw that too when I cleaned it up. This is what it looks like now. I cleaned behind the pots when they were out.

There are two spots that seem like they are meant touch: the wright leg of the blend pot seems to connect to the 123 resistor next to it, and the 123 and 473 resistors under the blend pot seem to touch.

Yep, those points are already connected on the PCB.

Your symptoms suggest that the dry signal path is working, the LFO is working, but your wet signal is dying somewhere.

I haven’t seen the trim pot mentioned - have tried adjusting that?

Do you have another BBD that you can try?

What is the dc voltage on pins 7 & 8 of BBD? Can you adjust that voltage to about 4.5 volts with the trim pot?

The BBD is MN3207, yah? And pins 7 and 8 are in the "northeast" corner? 0 voltage there. The trim pot doesnt' affect it. I get 4.3v at 5 and 6.

No handy spare BBD ICs here.

Thanks for your continuing help!

That’s not right (the voltage). Yes, 7/8 would be northeast corner. The BBD/MN3207 is IC2 in the PCB map below. Are we talking about the same chip? Pin 5 should be up over 7 volts at least

I see pin 5 goes to ground. What’s the other leg that I should test between?

No, pin 5 goes to Vb. That’s the junction of C20 and R42. Try pulling the bbd and see if Vb rises in the empty pin 5 socket. If it doesn’t, try pulling the clock chip and measure again.

Clock is IC4. It should also have Vb on pin 1.

Do you mean the junction betwee C20 and R40? R 42 is far from C20. If it's C20 and R40, I get no voltage with or without the 3207 or 3102.

Oh hang on - when measuring DC voltage, the black probe always goes to ground, and you measure voltage with the red probe. Sorry, thought that was understood.

Using this method, take and report voltages from all pins of the BBD. Do this with the bbd installed, and do it from the empty socket if pin5 voltage is still low.
