pop, pop, fizz, fizz... not a relief :(

first off... I get occassional pops when switching off or on. Usually it is the first 4 or 5 times I use the switch during a session. After that it seems fine. It doesn't matter where in the effects chain it is, if it is solo, or whether I use a power source or a battery. Any suggestions?

And second, there is a fizziness that surrounds the note and gets worse when I turn up either the range or level controls. Is this normal or is there something wrong somewhere? The effect seems to be working although it is much more subtle than some other envelope followers I've used in the past. I'm using a guitar with fairly hot single coils.

where do you all place the settings for the best use of the effect?

thanks for any thoughts.

The 440 circuit is not an extremely pronounced filter. And it does have a small amount of distortion to it. But it shouldn't be "fizzy" sounding. The switch is wired for grounded truebypass, so there shouldn't be any pop, but you can try lowering the 2.2M pulldown resistor to 1M. You could have a ground problem that is also causing the fizziness and pop.

Sometimes truebypass pedals pop and there's nothing you can do about it. Your work looks pretty good, so I have a feeling this is the case.

it is possible that one person's small amount of distortion is another's fizziness. It certainly isn't bad enough to cause an issue when used with a band.

How would I find a ground problem?

The ground problem that causes the pop could be anywhere from the pedal to the wall socket. That's why some people experience truebypass pops and can't do anything to get rid of it.

The 440 is a real one trick pony, but it is an infinitely easier build compared to any other envelope filter. The range and level knob, IMO, control neither range or level. You need to basically turn both blindly till you find a sweet spot. When you find a really sweet spot you will get some distortion on the tail end of the sweep. Is this what you are experiencing? If so, that's normal.

You can also get more range by using the 1M resistor instead of the 820k.

Try replacing the 2.2M with a 1M to get rid of the pop.
