My other thought is, this is a kind of one trick pony, and the effect isn’t very dramatic and varies from pickup styles. Is there a demo video somewhere?

Does the trimmer do anything, or can you hear anything with your audio probe ? Step 4 tells how to calibrate it. This is all very strange at this point, I’m with you.

Yes, probably. The effect works best with one note lines; technique is important as well. You MUST mute the previous note before the effect resets its envelope.

I missed the part where you checked the voltage on the LED, it may be burned out, do you have another one?

Don't put Q6 back in till you fix the in and out buffers. Remove C2, R4, and R6 as well. The way this effect works is that your signal simply passes from the Q1 input buffer to the Q2 output buffer. Q6 is like a hole that drains off all the signal along the way. When you play a note, signal also goes from Q1 to the envelope trigger via C2. The trigger tells Q6 to slowly close and stop draining off signal allowing signal to pass. So Q6 is kinda like a volume knob. This is what creates the volume swell effect.

You need to remove Q6, C2, R4, and R6 so that all you have is an input and output buffer.

I strongly advise you to solve one problem at a time. Get the swell effect working first and then address the LED issue. The LED has nothing to do with the effect circuit--its only function is to indicate whether the footswitch is in the engaged or bypassed mode.

Put C2 back in the PCB and see if you still have a working buffer
