Lazy Sprocket
Board Revision: V1.2

Hi guys!

Built the Lazy Sprocket, but i seem to be getting no envelope effect. I've double checked all the wiring and components and can't see anything that't wrong. I've built quite a few pedals so done the usual but kept a checklist below.

Reflowed: Yes
LED Working: Yes (currently on wrong side of board but thats purely cause im testing!)
Pedal working in bypass: Yes
Powering from mains or battery: tried both, same issue

I've grabbed the IC voltages below too.

Voltages from IC:

0

Anyone spot anything obvious?

I'm not sure why you soldered the transistors to their sockets. It shouldn't affect the function though. Have you tried adjusting the trimpot yet? Your IC voltages look good. Which FET came with your kit? That kit is very old. Have you been sitting on it for a while?

Hey!

It's force of habit that! I always dab a little solder on one let to make sure they don't come out later down the line!

It's a kit that I've been given to build for someone else - assuming they've had it for quite some time yh.

Trim pot has zero effect and the fet is a 2n5457.

Ive tried replacing it from my own parts - still the same.
Tried replacing the IC - still the same :(

I see at least one significant resistor error in the build. Please refer to the marked-up photo below. The two resistors I've circled should both be 1 Mohm (brown-black-GREEN-gold), but the one on the left is a 10K (brown-black-ORANGE-gold), so that value is incorrect by a factor of 100. This error should be corrected and the pedal retested.

The remaining resistors appear to be correct, but there are two (marked with arrows) that I can't see, so I'd suggest that you confirm that they are the right values (10K for the upper one and 470K for the lower one).

Hi mate,

Thanks for that! I've swapped it out for a 1M and checked the other two are correct values.

Still no change :(

Do you notice a voltage change on the gate of the FET with you strum a chord?

Hey!

Voltages below:
4.87 no strumming
1.95V with strumming

Sounds exactly the same with or without the effect engaged :(

I swapped every transistor to be doubley safe (with known working ones from my own stash).

Also if i remove any of the highlighted transistors in the pic below - the circuit continues to give the same output signal (no effect) - however removing any of the other transistors stops the output completey - which leads me to believe there is an issues prior to the highlighted transistors?

And no change when trimpot is adjusted.

The envelope trigger is working. You don't notice any change at all, even to the overall volume, when you adjust the trimpot?

Only remove the 5457. Have you socketed the transistors? Place a jumper between the D and S eyelets of the 5457. Does this kill the signal?

Hey!

Yeah all the transistors are socketed - i've checked the continunity from the socket to the correlating pad on teh board to ensure there is connection - there is.

Removed 5457 and jumpered D&S - does indeed kill the signal.

You appear to have signal from the envelope trigger. And everything in the signal path seems to be working as it should. The JFET just isn't shunting signal to ground. So I'd have to assume that the JFET is faulty. I know you said you've already replaced the 2N5457, but we've found that part to no longer be reliable. You should contact sales@buildyourownclone.com and request a new JFET for the lazy sprocket. It will be a 2SK30. This will have a different pinout, so you will need to twist the legs around a little. It has an SGD pinout instead of the DSG pinout.
