I just built my second BYOC Tremolo pedal (my 4th pedal in all) and everything seems to work properly but the depth knob does not have the same amount of effect as the first BYOC tremolo that I built.

My problem seems identical to 'Nobody's' problem that he had in this thread:

Nobody's Tremolo problem

Thing is... both of my builds are stock BYOC builds.

If it's the same problem will changing the 560k resistor that goes across from D1 to D3 to a 180k correct this problem? Is there another value I should use?

*edit* I have some spare resistors they are carbon-film, 1/2 watt, 5% tolerance - is this the correct type? Also, the closest thing to 180k that I have is 120k and 220k - would either of these values work?

Thanks!

The 180k was what I had on hand, you can use anything you want. Try the 220k, it will probably work fine.

Is it ok to use a 1/2 watt resistor? Looks bigger than the ones that came with the kit.

Also, both tremolo units are the same revision # and appear to use all of the same component values... what's with the difference in sound? Did something get changed?

You can use anything from a 1/8W to a 1W or higher resistor providing that it will physically fit on the board and inside the enclosure.

You're bound to have variances between builds of the same circuit. The tolerance of the components isn't tight enough to have each and every build sound exactly the same. And even if the components were identical it still may not sound exactly alike.

Thanks for the info.

I guess it's like cooking - you can use the same recipe with the same ingredients and it will come out a little different every time.

I put a 180k (bands are colored brown, grey, yellow just to be sure) resistor in there instead of the 560k and I think it improved it but it's not quite there... should I try another value resistor?

Go lower until you hit the sweet spot. Also, check to make sure all the other resistors are the correct value.

I checked all of the resistor values... I'll double check again once more. Everything seems identical to my other build.

The difference between the two builds, even with the new resistor value, is drastic.

PS how low should I go with the value? 10k? Lower than that?

Thanks again..

You're not going to hurt anything so just try it and see. But if you aren't getting enough depth after 100k, I'd say you've got a problem with the LFO section of the build.
