I'm building a klon buffer in a passive volumepedal. should I put the buffer before or after the volumepot?
Thanks for sharing any suggestions.

I believe the standard way to do it is before: between the input jack and the volume pot.

Thanks. I will do that then.
Would you know why (I'm not doubting you)?

Honestly, I don't know why. I suspect it would work either way, but that's the way I've seen it done.

Incidentally, you can also use a buffered bypass pedal (e.g., most Boss or Ibanez) or even any always-on true bypass pedal right before the volume pedal and accomplish basically the same thing.

For example, if you use the VP for swells, you could put a simple clean boost and/or compressor before it, throw them both in a loop, and use the loop switch to turn on your "swells rig".

You could also make it switchable pre and post volume.

I installed the buffer it works fine, but the volume amd 5-way switch crackle terribly now.
Is there a solution for that?

If your guitar is going straight into the buffer, the buffer you built probably has DC on the input. Make sure you have an input cap and a pull down resistor on the input.

It's the led that causes it.

Got a schematic of the circuit you’ve built?

I think Stephen's asking which version of the Klon buffer you used. Did you get it pre-assembled, or did you do it yourself?

I used this buffer: http://pedalparts.co.uk/docs/KlonBuff-v3.pdf

I took the led out of the circuit and this cured the problem. I would prefer the led of course.

That is one wonky looking buffer circuit. This is the schematic I use for my micro buffer. The only difference is that I use 2.2M resistors for R1 & R2.

Thanks. Are you suggesting that I should change R1 & R2 to 2.2m? Would that fix the problem with the led?

The two resistors have nothing to do with the LED. The LED and CLR are an entirely separate circuit from the buffer circuit. The only thing the two circuits share is +9V and ground. If the LED doesn’t light then the LED is bad (or backwards), the CLR is too large in value or there is something wrong with the connections to +9V and/or ground.
