I was messing around with my Crown Jewel with the Octave up in front of my fuzz and I was having a lot of fun with it. It would be great to either build my out daughter board or be able to build the octave up as a pedal. I'm looking for thoughts or suggestions on how to proceed and maybe some resources?

I wanted follow up and say I know it's a green ringer, but it is way better than the green ringer pedal I have. The CJ tone is 1000% better.

I have a pedal that has the daughter board in it with a volume control that I'd be willing to sell ($75.00 and I'll pick up shipping if you are in the continental US) . You can see it here (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=59636&p=499145&hilit=crown+jewel+daughter+board#p499145)
PM me if you are interested.

Steve

You may find some useful information on the CJ daughterboard in this thread: viewtopic.php?p=493823#p493823

Thanks! I'm trying to understand why the Octave up in my CJ is so much better than the Interval Fuzz I got from StewMac. More volume? I haven't taken the time to put them side by side yet. The Octave Up in the CJ sounds so good

Ok Sports fans! Let's get back in the game!

Comparing the BYOC schematic to the one I referenced on GGG, I found only a couple of differences. I am also referencing what info I have on the Stewmac pedal:

R2
BYOC - 150k
GGG - 160K
Stewmac - 160k

Q1, Q3 transistor values
BYOC - 2N3904
GGG - 2N5088 or 2N5089
Stewmac: 2N5089

D1, D2 diodes
BYOC - Ge
GGG - Says Si, Ge, Schotttky (Available kit has 1N914 Si)
Stewmac - 1N4148 Si

The BYOC also has an A100k POT on the output side of the circuit. I am going to get a PCB and a bag of parts for GGG and then build to BYOC spec. Knowing me, this will take over a month to complete. I'll report back my findings.

No real audible difference except for the diodes and you can put those on a switch.

I am definitely thinking about a diode selector mod. I will use the 2N3904 transistors for the sake of comparison.

It's been a long time, but if memory serves, the Green Ringer circuit works best when the diodes are balanced - i.e. matched like a set of power tubes. If you don't have a meter sensitive enough, you can simply socket the diode positions and try swapping in different combos of the same type until it sounds best to you. When I built mine years ago, matching the diodes made a huge difference.

Great tip! I hope to get to build it this weekend.

I realized I never shared this finished build. I like this little guy.
I use a PCB from GGG and parts I had around. I put a pot on the output, though I always have it dimed. I used germanium and silicon diodes on a switch to compare them. It's subtle. I like the germs a bit better, but that's only because I'm paying close attention. I don't think it matters a lot.
I have another ringer from stewmac in a larger box I was considering loading with diode switches as an experiment. I feel like there isn't a major tonal difference.
