ROG's Ginger: http://runoffgroove.com/ginger.html

FC layout, just verified by crbmoa. I thought this circuit would benefit from a PCB with all the pads along the edge, option for various trimmer sizes, and no standing resistors.

Verified - AND, it kicks butt!!

I heard the sound clips before, but you don't get a feel for what the circuit does until you play it.

It was just a pre amp with my tele, but with my jazz bass.......DAYUM!!

Goes from not quite clean boost all the way to Jack Bruce land. LOTS of head room, and the treble and bass controls give way more latitude than I expected.

If you play bass (and I am talking to YOU, DC!), you need this!

I'm working on this now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like either D1 or D2 should be reversed in the layout. The flat side for both are shown facing toward ground. D3 and D4 look correct. Looking forward to finishing this and giving it a go.

Take a look at the ROG Rick embedded in the original post.

I looked at the schematic before posting and was 99+% sure the layout has one backwards. Never hurts to ask...other than annoying the pros, that is.

Now, do you recommend socketing the LEDs (like you did in your prototype) or just go ahead and solder them in place? Since these are clipping diodes is there any reason to try different ones or are red LEDs what give it the Ampeg sound?

I used red LEDs for clippers because that was what was called for in the BOM.

I socketed the position because it was a test board, and I wanted to be able to pull things to troubleshoot without butchering the board. But the layout was of course stellar.

I typically socket anything I might want to fudge with. Trying various clippers would be a great way to familiarize yourself with different qualities exhibited by different diodes in this circuit.

AND - my little 3mm leds lack a 'flat side', and they are small and hard to see and easy to accidentally roll in your fingers, so I wanted the ability to flip them without destroying the board if I muffed the installation.

Finished it this afternoon, just need to put it in a box. I didn't try it with bass yet, but I like it a lot for guitar. Tone controls are very flexible so it will probably be great on bass too.

Rick's board made it an easy build.

This one will be my first build. What size enclosure would you recommend?

Hammond 1590B seems the best fit IMO.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but on the LED clippers, do the flat sides face each other, it's hard to tell in the photo, and the board doesn't appear to be marked, or does it matter???? Rookie of the Year over here!!!

just make sure the pairs are opposite. pairs = d1, d2; d3, d4

One last question, if I used 5mm LEDs instead if 3mm, would I get less distortion?

I think it will depend on forward voltage..
Like the difference in red diffused or water clear of 3mm or 5mm, there will likely be differences for sizes too.

Best bet.. socket! There have been a couple builds that had led clippers that i really liked 1 led and 1 germ diode instead of the 2 leds that the bom called for.

funny story, I socketed them. Listened to demos, was getting about the same subtle od, removed the sockets, soldered the LEDs. Looking at pictures,oh shit, were they 3mm or 5mm?
