totally useful!! now i have to get around to making a couple tonebenders.. i mean what the hell... i have like 10 boards, and tons of trannies for em. what the hell is wrong with me. i should just do it. ooooh no, you just try to stop me.. i dare you..

what is the diff between the max1044 and tc1044?? any?

The TC can carry more voltage phreek! And is usually cheaper too.

Hey, thanks, and I'm very flattered by that subheading, but I have to say, this idea has been around longer than I've been building. (About 6 years)
I've submitted a few layouts here using this concept, but I'm certain it had been done by others before me. I've just shared it.
My layouts simply use the information provided in the stat sheets.
I first saw it used in Tonepad's filter sample & hold, where a MAX1044 was used to provide + and - power, (some 1970 era pedals had two 9v batteries for this)
I think Madbean's doubly clever Roadrage may predate my use of this idea too.
Credit is definately due to somebody, but not me.

Getting a Bi-Polar PSU using those converters is also a cool way to get more headroom out of op-amp circuits etc.

The limitation with these converters is current draw; I think the MAX1044 is rated at 20mA so you have to be kind of carefull what you use it for (for fuzzes its perfect though).
