I intend to make a nice small layout for this Astrotone Fuzz schematic. And then order some boards. And then release all the files in the hopes of spawning a flood of the market with cheap "boutique" clone products.

I've attached a known-good schematic (the green one) for comparison. Let me know if you see errors. Thanks!

(I will add power filtering, polarity diode, CLR, etc., later.)

Looks right to me, just not as green.

Would you like me to build one?

Actually, yes. I had planned to do a single-sided layout so it can be etched as well as fabbed.

So if you have the time/interest, that would be awesome. I should have it done tomorrow.

Sweet.
Any particular trannys in mind?

Did I say tomorrow? I meant right now.

As for trannies, I would say that anything low gain should work for Q1. I would suggest 2N4401 as a first choice, and 2N3904 as second. Q2 is a buffer, so gain should be a non-issue. I'd go with anything quiet, like maybe MPSA18. But damn near anything will work. I'm actually curious to see what would happen if Q2 were replaced with an equivalent op amp buffer.

Ben, PM me with your requirements for resolution and I'll email you the goods.

Great Job!

Is there a story behind this circuit design that i should be aware of :?:

Here's the artwork if anyone wants to have a go. I think it's good to go, but Ben is going to test it sometime over the next couple days.

Native resolution is 600DPI.

If I fab a onelayer board at superhardon park, will it still be tinned thruholes?
I need that for a stacking adapter I'm workin on.
Must be the simplest scheme I've seen from you in a long long time hihi.

Yes, it will have silkscreen and plated through-holes.

Yep, it was pretty easy.

Don't go etching this one yet folks... except you Rookie, you go etch lots and lots of these.

I may produce a good quantity of those boards..........., you give me authorization Forrest?

Ben pointed out a very major error, so here's the updated schematic, layout and art. Should be good now.

That's a pretty major error in application but a minor one to make.

I'd like a board or two.

Was just about to point out that output connection of the Q2 buffer!

I've built one and been playing with it for the last couple of hours, trying different trannys and clippers...sounds really good to me :D
I'll attempt to verify the revised layout tomorrow.

Ben, do you find that the bias is stable across different transistors types? I could always add a trimmer for Q1 to give some flexibility, but if it's not needed then I'll leave it as is.

I think a bias adjustment would be handy. I've tried 2N2222A, 2N5088, BC549C, 2N3904, 2N3641 and even an AC127.
Collector voltages varied wildly from 1.8v (2N5088) to 7.2v (BC549) with a 9v supply. Some sounded a little misbiased to me (fizzy or splatty.)
I think my favorite is the 2N3641, though it's collector was 6v, which is I guess is close to 'right.'
I also wonder if that might have been the original transistor, apparently they were marked '641' which Analogue Man claims is a date... But my (formerly yours) 2N361 look exactly like those he's pictured.
Clean up is very good, but a bit too rapid also, which again I think more flexable biasing would help with.
BTW the tone control isn't much to write home about, just cuts the bass and ruins the fuzz.
I socketed everything, and think it sounds better with a 100n output cap too. It's a MPSA18 at Q2.

Alright. Consider it done.

Or maybe a different value input pot? The input impedance is pretty shitty with that 100K pot to ground on the input. Granted, low input impedance is part of the reason "clean up" works with guitar volume. But maybe 250K would be smoother. Just a guess.

Yeah, it's really simplistic. If I were trying to make improvements for my own version, I'd totally redo the tone control (or just get rid of it). But I wanted this project to be "vintage correct". ;)

The King of Clones uses 470n for the input cap. If you haven't tried that yet, give it a shot. It might help out a little with the tone control usefulness. Might not either, but it's worth trying.

Thanks for doing all the bench work. I'll see if I have time to breadboard it tonight or maybe tomorrow.

My boss gave me a "mental health day" this Thursday, so I will definitely have time to tinker then. Hopefully sooner, but no later than Thursday.

Breadboarded this tonight. Made some of my own tweaks. I need to do a few more tests and then I'll publish my version.

Pretty cool circuit. I'd actually call it a "heavy dynamic overdrive" more than a fuzz. Kinda like a lite version of the Colorsound Overdriver. Kinda.
