I was poking through my Eagle repository just now and realized I'd drawn up a schematic for the old Tonebender MKII silicon version.

I already baned out a layout, but have a look and see if there is anything amiss. I'm thinking maybe a collector-base cap (470p) on Q1 would give it a more authentic "germanium tone"? Who knows.

FINAL SCHEMATIC IS FURTHER DOWN

What the heck is a SS9013 when its at home??

Mictesters one over at FSB is really nice (similar to Doug Hammond's Hot Silicon) also his varient with the James tonestack (hate the Muff tonestack, have I mentioned that before? ), they are the ones I'd look to for refinements. Whats C4 all about then?

It's a cheap-but-good transistor with nice low gain (between 100 and 120 hFE).

Not really sure. I saw it in the attached schematic by our friend Dragonfly.

C4 filters out some high end.

1 trimmer each, nice. I need to build up something like this after my frustrating DEAD lil angel...

Since we're final/y asking questions about circuits, not debating the non-existance of God...
Why does Dragonfly's have a diode at the base of Q2?

Check out this page for an explanation of the diode:

Circuit is verified. I also added a collector-base feedback cap on Q1 to give it more faux leakage for bias purposes and old-school mojo.

Note: Low-gain transistors can be used Q1-Q3. No specific parts are required. I chose two very low-gain trannies for Q1/Q2 and a higher-gain, lower-noise tranny for Q3. But just about anything should work.

Here's the final:

Culturejam, that is the nicest layout I have ever seen, so easy to read!

I tested 100 2n3904 from tayda.

All read between 290-310. Anyone else getting these with gain that high? I am guessing that is too high for this tonebender or just about anything else I bought them for.?!...

alright! I was shocked mine were SO consistently high. I have 2n2222. thanks

I need to find some cheap very low gain (consistent) silicon.

found this website for the first time.

http://www.hawestv.com/amp_projects/fuzzbox/fuzz4.htm#stabilizer
good info about adjusting transistor gain by sizing emitter resistors. specified for fuzzface, but just as useful in these gain stages. And I know they are the same stages basically. I assume someone may not know already. :P
