So yeah, this is a mashup (as the kids say) of a couple ideas. It's sort of like the Sun Lion, sort of like a boost-switchable Fuzz Factory, and it uses the same "proprietary chip set" from the good-old Retro Channel "The Fuzz". Okay, so it's neither proprietary nor a chip set, and is in fact a transistor array IC (LM3046). It's basically several low-gain NPNs inside an IC package. I tested gain, and they were all between 100 and 110. Mojo!
So basically this is a Linear Power Booster in front of a Fuzz Face with a simple output buffer at the end. There is a switch that toggles between boost+fuzz and just fuzz alone. I added some caps on the fuzz face trannies between collector/base to soften up the silicon sound a bit and sort or "fake" some capacitive leakage (like in a germanium).
The LM3046, and it's sister chip the LM3086, are no longer in production as through-hole ICs. But you can find them at a couple of the more popular surplus suppliers for pretty cheap. And we all know that discontinued = Mojo!
I have not tested this yet, but it looks pretty solid.
