BYOC ... great stuff.

Wondering about the hi-pass nature of the comp. The blend is a great idea, but the non-comp'd signal is not flat, certainly lacking in what us bass players NEED, and that's the velvety bottom that ripples beer at the club. It's a good comp otherwise, very adjustable eh?

Is there a mod that will let the "dry" part of the signal vault through the traces retaining it's lower octave integrity? It'd be pretty neat to have a sonically tight comp in the bass chain.

Cheers!

A good way to let lower frequencies pass through is to raise input and output caps. The in and out caps to the dry side of the comp are C18(in) and either C21/22(out) there are two values on two different schematics. It's been a while and I don't like to say something unless I'm sure but I believe the 2nd schem is correct and it's C21. We should get confirmation soon. Both caps are 1uf so socket and experiment. Start with 4.7uf non polarised if you can.

C7 would create the biggest loss of bass. .01uf is a rather small input cap, even for guitar. For bass, I'd try changing that to a .1uf first.

Thanks from a lot of help from Morgan I now have a better understanding of what's going on.

If you want lower frequencies on just the dry side than raise C18 (socket and experiment)
Raise C7 if you'd like better bass response with the whole circuit as the Boss (Keith) mentioned up top.
Hope this helps.

Has anyone tried these things? I'm about to order this for our bassist but I'd like some input first

I have tried them all. The 5-K is simply better suited for guitar.

Build your friend a Opticomp. MUCH simpler build, and way less of a struggle to make it play nice on the low end.
