My friend gave me a non-working Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (usa). I already have one with the Fromel mods done. I was thinking of ripping everything out and doing a p2p 2xEl34 circuit in there. I am fine to buy new transformers, but I would like to keep drilling or cutting the chassis down to a minimum. Could anyone recommend a kit that would be a good fit to lay into the HRD? I would maybe consider a Ab763 circuit and order some yellow jackets for it as an alternative...

Ps: my skill level is such that I don't trust myself to select my own parts list (like Hoffman) and I probably should use step-by-step instructions just in case. I have done some pedals, the Fromel mods, and build a Triode Electronics champ. Or maybe it is just time to suck it up and push myself...

Thanks,
Ryan

You could drop a mojotone in it, I've done that before. I have a chassis that's cut for a bassman kit to fit in the HR combo if you want something you don't have to cut at all.

The lower pictures in this thread will load.

That amp looks cool, I like the blue and how you have the cap condo laid in. I will be thinking about it... it would be a shame to put yellow jackets in that amp, but I already have a showman with two tubes pulled as my main rig, so I might look at some EL34 options... thank you, definitely thinking it over.

You would think that since the HRD is so popular, there would be a kit on the market that was fool proof already...

So I ended up buying a 5F6A "59 Bassman" kit from Mable Audio including the chassis and putting in a diy mounting system to make it line up right, and using way too many mods from Rob Robinette's site, and doing a custom 2x10 baffle for it. After blowing many bias filter caps and a PT, and having to get professional help troubleshooting, I would say that I would have been better off going with a more expensive kit with step-by-step directions and all premium components. But the thing finally works and I will post pics and clips soon.

I learned a lot. Pairing different speakers, in this case a emi ragin cajun and a ramrod, baffle design rabbit hole unlocked, how to cut a circle with a dremel, and mods. Mods. Mods. Like the 5F6A is the stem cell that can differentiate into a JTM or a BF Bassman, so I went overboard in applying mods to be able to make it sound more fendery or marshally with a flick of a few switches and switching channels...

Did I mention I blew stuff up, a lot? Like I would have been afraid to gig with it if I hadnt eventually had a tech pronounce it safe. Like, "area dad rocker attempts to build amp, winds up building IED, bound for Gitmo."
