Would this work fo a simple asym clipping mod on the 250+?

If that diode is in series with another it would be easier to just use a SPST switch to short it out of the circuit. Connect one lug of the switch to one end of the diode and the other lug to the other end. When you actuate the switch to close the contacts it removes the diode from the circuit leaving just the other two diodes.

Would this work to choose either a 1N914 or a 1N34A or a buswire?

A slightly simpler arrangement would be to use a SPST and a DPDT switch. Connect a diode across the throw lugs of the DPDT switch to select which diode you are using. Use the SPST switch as described above to short the diodes completely out of the circuit.

Would this do it?

With the SPST switch in the down position the DPDT switch will select the diode to be used in the circuit. With the SPST switch in the up position you short the DPDT switch out of the circuit because the signal will follow the path of least resistance which is thru the SPST switch.

I have no knowledge of electronics. I learned almost everything from here. I got a 250+ kit to build and I want to add some switches to it just to make it look cooler! lol So I figured I would experiment with sym/asym clipping to see if there is a difference.

Thanks man!

Working with switches is more an excersize in logic rather than electronics.

And if you get a DPDT on-on-on switch, you can wire all this with just ONE switch.

(Am I repeating myself? :wink:)

Over the years I've learned to avoid using ON-ON-ON type toggle switches. More often than not the mechanical portion of the switch fails and has to be replaced. They just aren't very rugged in my experience.

I just ordered 10 on-on-on switches from hongkongsuperseller on ebay...UL approved...we'll see how they are.

That's a very good heads up Steven, thanks for the tip. I guess it also depends on the manufacturer.

I wonder, are you a guitar builder? On-on-on switches are more commonly used on guitars, and we all know what those guitarists are doing with their fingers when not playing... :o

I'm a programmer so thats what got me thinking about the switches. I picked up 2 DPDT toggles so I'm gonna do the mod but add 2 leds on the switch that shorts the other switch to indicate asym/sym mode.

Never built a guitar before although I would like to try one day. I've been an electronics hobbiest for as long as I can remember. My Dad was a radio/radar tech guy in the Air Force as I was growing up so I've been doing this kind of stuff for longer than I'd like to say. :lol:

Time to try a dual color led perhaps...?

How about this. A DPDT switch to switch between asym and sym clipping and 2 leds showing which mode it is in. If it is asym mode, then you can choose between 2 different diodes.

Image

Here is the psudo code...
{
----- if switch 1 = position1 then
----- {
---------- led 1 = true
---------- exit
----- }
----- else
-----{
----------led 2 = true
----------if switch2 = position1 then
----------{
---------------diode1 = true
----------}
----------else
----------{
---------------diode2 = true
----------}
-----}
}

sorry about the psudo code but as a programmer that's the only way I can understand modding. lol
Will this work?

LOL indeed! You really are a proprammer!

Here's a tip: If you get into DSP programming, you can combine your skills in both work and hobby into a bright future...
