I've got some questions about opamps.
What is it and what does it do?
What is the difference between the modern plastic and metal opamps?
I have been reading and some people say the metal can LM308 is superior to the newer one in the Rat distortion pedal.

Can I or SHOULD I change my opamps in other pedals - for example , the BYOC delay I'm building now?

Thanks for the help!

Changing op amps makes very little difference. The metal can op amps are really more of a selling point. But that's just my opinion. BTW, my 78 rat has the plastic LM308 in it. I don't know if the rat ever really used a metal can op amp. I've seen a metal can CA3080 in a script logo dyna comp once. You definitely don't want to use a metal can op amp in the delay. The op amp in the delay is for a buffer...you want fidelity in a buffer. The inferiority of the metal can could possible "improve" a distortion though.
