Edit: Correct diagram is diplayed now.

Would this diagram be correct for a DPDT On-On switch to switch between the normal diodes and LEDs? Also, would this also work with an On-Off-On switch to have a "clean boost" in the middle position? I got this idea from looking at Beavis' switching between two components on a board diagram, shown here:

i think from what you have drawn you would be switching between mismatched pairs...

from a diode and an LED to a different diode and LED...

but the general idea should be good... just swap some wires around. it is what i am planning on (i am NO expert by the way!!)

- i didnt think of the 'centre off' for a clean boost... would be interesting if it works...

i am also adding another switch to put the asymetrical clipping diode in or out as i have no real idea what this will sound like and, well, why the hell not!

- drilled the extra holes and prepped the surface last night - painting tonight...

cheers,

malcolm

Connect lugs 2 & 5 of the switch to each end of the right most diode on the pcb. Now connect both diodes across lugs 1 & 4. Make sure they are facing in opposite directions from each other. Now connect the LEDs across lugs 3 & 6 and again make sure they are opposite one another. With the toggle in the down position you will be using the diodes for clipping. Flip the switch up and you are using the LEDs. There is no need to install the jumper across the left most diode spot on the pcb when using this method.

DPDT lug pattern

1 _ _ 4
2 _ _ 5
3 _ _ 6

Like this:

Also, if I used an On-Off-On, would the Off position be a clean boost as described in the Screamer mods? Thanks so much! 8)

No, the diodes and LEDs only go across the lugs on the switch. They do not get connected directly to the pcb. Only the 2 center lugs of the switch get connected directly to the pcb.

An ON-OFF-ON DPDT switch would lift the diodes out of the circuit.

Thanks for your help Stephen! I'll go ahead and edit my previous diagrams so other people won't get confused, sifting though all these. 8)

Since I can't leave well enough alone, will this diagram (provided by matchless) work with an On-On-On switch to select between 3 different clipping modes? I'd assume it would go in the first diode slot on the right hand side where the blue lines go in my previous diagram.

Hi,

Good info.

Would the first (correct) diagram work with an ON-OFF-ON switch to give a clean boost in the middle?

Is there no need for any jumpers to be set? All i would do is connect the toggle to the right most holes?

Thanks :)

According to Stephen, there are no jumpers needed. Hopefully I'll get my 250+ today and will be able to try this out.

Does any one have a part number for a On/On/On DPDT switch? I'd like something with a small profile. I didn't see anything at Small Bear, Pedal Parts Plus, or Radio Shack, and Mouser is confusing.

As far as I know there is no such thing as an ON-ON-ON switch. I'm pretty sure they're all ON-OFF-ON instead.

The mouser part number for a DPDT ON-OFF-ON toggle switch would be 108-1MD3T6B1M1QE-EVX

I own an On-On-On switch. It's called a DP3T switch. I bought it from here:

My 250+ kit comes today so I'll let you know how it works out.

I use one called Apem 5644AB.

Not very common, but Mouser should have something similar. Or search eBay, geekmacdaddy bought a batch there recently.

Logic looks like this:

Image

Acts as a SP3T, outputs on 1, 4 and 6 and you solder the jumper from lug 3 to lug 5 yourself.

Mouser search results.

- That didn't work, try this instead:

From the looks of it the two terms mean the exact same thing. I think ON-OFF-ON is more accurate though. The center lugs are the poles which never actually get "turned on". They are either connected to the top lugs (ON), the bottom lugs (ON) or they don't get connected to anything at all (OFF) when the lever is in the middle position.

Stephen,

The on-on-on type toggle switches are specially modded with internal connectors lugs 2>3 and lugs 4>5 that connect when in the middle mode. See the diagram I posted above (lifted from the datasheet).

(There's also 4PDT on-on-on switches, which are basically two 2PDT on-on-on's together, making up a real DP3T toggle.)

So what is the toggle for the Tri-Boost? It does 3 things. Wouldn't it be an on/on/on?

Nope, it's an on-off-on. Clever use of parallel caps here:

Image

In the middle mode the switch is off, so signal passes through the .005 cap only.
To one side the .005 is in parallel with a .015, and to the other with a .033.

So the sequence goes 0.020/0.005/0.038

(It's apparently a hipass filter inside the germanium booster.)
