Just got through with the build and tried it out and set the trimpot. It worked fine. I bent the transistors down and put on the back and tried again. This time I powered it with an enelope battery. The power light went on and then off and got a little od but no fuzz. I went back to the battery and same thing.

Not sure what happened. Any suggestions.

I'm also assuming that I can disconnect the power jack all the way and just use the battery. I've heard that the battery is better to use with these type germ. fuzzes.

I'd try re-seating the legs of the transistors in the sockets first, since the problem started after you bent them over. It's easy for one of the legs to lose solid contact with the socket. And make sure when you bent them over that you didn't cause two legs to contact each other.
