New here, hopefully I am in the correct place. Just compleatrd my first BYOC Mouse pedal. Everything is functioning correctly but I am only getting 1/2 volume. Pulled board out and inspected and can’t see anything that looks wrong. Also, what is the function of the GE diodes? (Thought I had backwards because my I striating did not match as shown in build direction photo) and broke one trying to remove. Pedal still functions after removal. Still 1/2 volume. Any ideas welcome thanks! Alex

In order to help you, the first thing we need is a good set of photos of your build. They need to be LARGE, well-focused, well-lit shots of both sides of the PCB and all of the switch and jack wiring.

The function of the germanium diodes is to clip your audio signal when they are selected by the 3-position toggle switch. The new Mouse kit offers three different clipping modes using three different diode types: LED's, silicons and germaniums. They differ quite widely in the amount of signal they clip (Ge's clip the most and LED's the least), resulting in different amounts of distortion, compression and output volume. As you have found, the pedal will still continue to function without them in the circuit, but will obviously sound different.

The photos need to be much larger than that, I'm afraid. We need to be able to see much more detail, like the quality of individual solder joints and the color banding on the resistors. Take a look at the posted photo in THIS THREAD--that's the kind of close-up detail we're looking for.

BTW, I'm going to move this thread to the Op amp based distortions, fuzzes and overdrives sub-forum where it properly belongs.

Hold the phone! I think I've spotted your problem--it appears that you've installed the JFET transistor backwards. The flat side should be should be facing up towards the jacks, not down toward the footswitch. You'll need to remove it (carefully! 3-legged components are not easy to de-solder) and swap it around.

No dice, I damaged the thranforner trying to get it out. I’ve cleaned up the holes and I’ll order a new part. Hopefully that will get me back on track. What do you recommend for diodes? I need to replace them too.

Thanks, Alex.

1N34a, 1N60, D9E, D9D, D9B, or just about any germanium diode will do the job.

As for the low volume issue, I would guess the problem is with your lead dress or soldering. You have some leads sticking out farther than need be. Your wiring has quite a bit of exposed conductor. You should clean that up. In doing so, maybe you'll find a short somewhere. Also, try reflowing all your solder joints.
