I just finished my Silver Pony 2 and the germanium diodes are quieter than the led and silicon. Is that normal?

Yes, that's normal. Different types of diodes clip off more or less of your signal. Nature of the beast.

Yep! To add to duhvoodooman's response, I would say that you get a different amount of grit and compression from each of them as well. And you'll notice the difference most with the gain knob set higher. My advice: experiment liberally and find a setting you love, and then set it and forget it.
