Hey guys,

I finished the classic overdrive build. I did the impedance mod , the more gain mod and the more bass mod.

I love the sound the pedal has , really in your face! It even kicks the maxon od9’s ass, butt when dialing the gain all the way down it still sounds like the gzin is all the way up on the maxon. Is thus normal for this overdrive? Or is this due to the more gain mod?

When dialing the gain up, it almost sounds like your playing a high gain amp infront of another high gain amp.

Thanks guys!!

That does not sound normal to me, although I have never heard the more gain mod.

Please post photos of your build, making sure they are large and clear enough for us to see details such as the color bands on your resistors. Please include photos of both sides of the circuit board as well as your wiring. If you need help posting the photos, let us know.

Please confirm the component values you used for R7, C4 and VR1 as shown on the PCB map below.

Also, as the value of R7 is decreased to up the gain, the minimum drive factor is also increased, so you need to decrease the value of R6 proportionately to compensate. So if that's a 2K resistor in R7, I'd lower the value for R6 from the stock 51K down to 22K. But you can go even lower if you want an even cleaner minimum drive setting. It doesn't affect the max. drive hardly at all.

Hey the R is a 2K7 resistor for more gain. The C4 is a 224J and VR1 is a B100K pot.

R6 is a 51K.

OK, for the stock pedal, the minimum gain factor is 12, the max. is 118 and the bass roll-off frequency is 720 Hz.

Are you sure that the Drive pot (VR1) is 100k?? That doesn't make sense, as that would lower the max. gain of the pedal. For the following values, I have assumed that this value was an error and that the stock 500K pot is installed. With that Drive pot value and the other values you gave, min. gain would be 20, max. gain 205, and the bass roll-off frequency 268 Hz. So while the min. gain would be higher, a gain factor of 20 certainly isn't anywhere nearly high enough to cause a "verry overdriven" sound at the minimum Drive pot setting. This suggests something else going on. I don't see anything obviously wrong with the pedal as far as component placement. Suggest that you check the resistance across the VR1/R6 series combo to make sure that it is functioning correctly. Do you have a multimeter and know how to measure resistance with it? If so, take two resistance readings between outer lug of VR1 and the bottom lead of R6, the first with VR1 fully CW and the second with it fully CCW. Report those results here.

BTW, if you want to drop the minimum drive closer to the stock value, change the value of R6 to a 27k (gain = 11) or 22k (9).

Ok guys, since the pot is a blend pot, its not the pot creating the sound im experiencing, even when turned down it is there.

No, it's not a blend pot, which would mix dry signal with overdriven signal. VR1 functions as a variable resistor in the feedback loop of the op amp, which determines the circuit gain. When fully CW, the combined resistance through VR1 and R6 is ~551 Kohms (max. gain) and when fully CCW, ~51Kohms (min. gain). This is why I'd like you to take those two resistance readings per my previous post. We need to confirm that VR1 is functioning correctly.

Hey voodoo, i did the more clean mod as you previously suggested. R6 22K.

This solved my issue. Complete diffrent pedal now. The overdriven signal is gone, even when boosting the drive al the way up, it stays articulate. What a difference!

Thanks for the help so far! Currently its my favourite drive. The tone control is also really powerfull on this one.

Glad to hear changing R6 did the trick. ENJOY!
