i checked the instrument cables and the connections and the jacks - they are working fine. i've triple-checked the cables - they are plugged into the correct I/O jacks. still no tone. just can't figure out what they problem is...

well, i suppose i'll set this build aside and come back to it later. maybe i'll just try another build of the same kit.

That said, if you are getting continuity from point to point including your cable tips but you are NOT getting signal in bypass mode, I am quite stumped. Meaning no offense, I'm inclined to think there's something you haven't tested exactly correctly. I'm trying to think what else it might be. You're doing these tests while the LED is off, right?

That's correct. We're only concerned with bypass as the moment. Testing incorrectly is a definite possibility. If...

1. you plug a mono cable into the input and a mono cable into the output AND you are getting continuity between the tips of the cables
2. you get continuity between the sleeves of the two cables
3. you DO NOT get continuity between the tip and sleeve of either cable

....then bypass should be working. Unless the signal path is shorted out against something other than ground.
