I’ve built a few pedals and amps and can typically figure out any issues. I suspect this one may be an issue with the TA7136P chip based on some other posts I’ve read on this forum.

The led lights up when engaged and the signal bypasses properly when disengaged. When engaged the pedal is completely silent.

Here are my chip pin voltages. I’m using a power supply measuring 9.04 volts.

1: 7.03
2: 6.33
3: 5.07
4: 0.00
5: 6.54
6: 6.46
7: 9.04

Purchased 10/27/22 on Reverb from Axe…and You Shall Receive. Purchase new in bag, unassembled.

I was able to resolve this issue by removing the Toshiba TA7136P op amp and replacing with an alternative. I’ll start a new thread in the next day or so explaining what I did and my evaluation of the results in the hopes it helps someone else with a similar issue. Happy Thanksgiving!!

So as most of you probably know, if you end up with a bad TA7136P in a DS-1 circuit you are short on replacement options unless you are hoarding a stash of the long-obsolete originals. After going through the initial steps of troubleshooting I have a bad chip.

There is a guy on Reverb that goes by the handle “Drunk Beaver” that was making DS-1 clones out of Poland using an OPA604 op amp as a replacement for the TA7136P so I started digging in to that as an option. I found this TA7136P to OPA604 adapter. I’ll place a link if I’m allowed but you can easily find it with a quick search on the google box using the part number in the picture.

So now the big question…does it work? and how does it sound? As a reference I have a completely unmodified 1984 MIJ DS-1 on my board as well. It should be noted that when I built the Orange Distortion from BYOC I did the Big Muff mod, shrill highs mod and I used both sets of silicone clipping diodes. Obviously even if I built a perfect clone, chip and all, these two pedals won’t sound the same due to the mods I made on the BYOC clone.

Well it works! And it sounds…good. My signal path is a Pearly Gates loaded in the bridge of an LP > Orange Distortion pedal > MIJ DS-1 > Mesa Boogie V Twin preamp Clean Channel > 18 watt Marshall clone power section > 2x12 cab loaded with one Alnico Cream (90 watts) and one Scumback M75 (100 watts). The speakers are 8 ohms each connected in parallel at 4 ohms. For this test I am only engaging one pedal at a time while other is “bypassed”. The old DS-1 is powered with a 12V power supply and the BYOC pedal is powered with a separate isolated 9V power supply. If I left out anything important lmk.

Ok so to my ear with this rig the two pedals need to be dialed in differently to get similar sounds but you can get pretty damn close. The big difference in tone is that the MIJ version has a slightly more mid-scooped bassier sound while the BYOC has a slightly boosted midrange or perhaps scooped in a slightly different spot. While both versions can easily get into that ice picky horrible sounding territory I think with some tweaks I may be able to dial that tone in a little better. The BYOC pedal seems to have a very small useable range for me on tone knob…anything above 10 or 11 oclock is too ice picky still.

Anyway the whole point to me was to have something slightly different than the original since I have the original already! In that line of thinking I am satisfied but I still want to tweak the BYOC pedal a bit to get some added bass or low mids and cut back the shrill highs even more. I could play around with some cap/ resistor values and report back. Lmk what you would recommend. I have a decent stash of parts laying around.

There are lots of mods. What exactly do you want to do? If you want to increase bass, the easiest way is to increase C5. If you want to reduce treble, the easiest way is to increase C8. The tone control is fairly typical BMP tone stack, so there are lots of mods you can do there to shift the frequency of the mid scoop, and/or play with the Q.
