i've got one of the original silicon fuzz face kits. works great. i'm just looking for more volume and treble from it to cut thru in a live situation.

i've tried to search and read up on possible solutions. from changing the volume pot to changing caps and resistors. don't really know where to start...

We didn't always have the foresight to keep accurate revision numbers (or even any at all), so it's hard to know which version you have. Can you post a pic of your PCB?

I can try and take a picture sometime next week maybe

I do know it was one of the very first versions available (bought it right around the time you opened up 'shop').

That doesn't help much. We lost those files in a crash years ago. And I don't remember things too well anymore.

i did take some pictures this morning...

actually tried substituting the 470 ohm resistor w/ a 1k one but now the pedal/sound is intermittent so i'm sure i goofed up somewhere...

can't get my photobucket account to cooperate :-(

you can post them directly to the board here, no need for photobucket or imgur

Holy Moses! That's one of the first kits.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do. It crapped out on you when you added the 1k because it doesn't have a bias. You'd need to replace the 8.2k resistor with a 10k or 25k trimpot. Or add a 3rd knob for bias. Or replace the 8.2k so that the total resistance to the collector is about 8.53 (8.2k + 330). So in your case you'd want a 7.5k resistor.

You can't really add anymore treble. You could use a smaller value input cap. This would cut some of the bass. If you can cut a little bass and increase the volume, that's essentially increasing the treble.

 I've been around here since Jan. '07 and this is the first time I've ever seen one of those!

like i said it was an early one, lol

i think i ordered within a month or so of byoc being online...wanted to try my hand at building a pedal so i ordered both the silicon and germanium fuzzes.

so replace the 8.2k resistor w/ one of 7.5k?

and yeah cutting the bass would make the treble stand out more so i'm open to suggestions on that. i think one of the mods i read about and tried is cutting the 2.2 cap and i put in one that is .06-always open to suggestions to try

Yes, replace the 8.2k with a 7.5k. I like a .033uF or .047uF for the input cap.

Also, I just noticed that you have a .1uF cap where you should have a .01uF cap.

When I first started there were just 3 kits - the fuzz face, tonebender, and rangemaster, and they were all on point to point boards like that.

Interesting! Did they come with all the needed components, or did the customer have to source some of them?

so the changes in store:
7.5k resistor in place of 8.2k
.01uF cap instead of .1uf (is that the 'big' green one?)
and change the input cap to .033uf instead of the .06 i have in there

thank y'all for all your help

Yep.

BTW, where did that other huge cap come from?

one i had in my stash of caps. its paper in oil so probably not the most dependable and more than likely has drifted. it saved a trip to the store or order over the net, lol.

BTW to the person that asked-the kits i bought at the time came w/ all the parts you needed...

.01 & .033: https://buildyourownclone.com/collectio ... -capacitor select the values from the drop down menu.

7K5: https://buildyourownclone.com/collectio ... -resistors also select the value from the drop down menu

Well, that's kind of true to BYOC history in its own way too. We pretty much all start out that way.
