Hi All

Really pleased with my first build, everything worked first time, but....

I wasn’t sure about the texture knob. It seemed so very subtle in operation.

However, I have one bass with rounds on, and that convinced me all was well.

My question is, since I usually play with flats, can I boost the octave effect?

Thanks in advance

Hi guys
This has been in a box since I built it. Couldn’t really get to the bottom of the subtle nature of the texture knob. Thing is, just replaced the strings on the bass, and since I had a gap in the pedal board, thought I’d give it another go. Pretty sure texture knob isn’t doing anything at all! If I get the chance over the weekend I’ll have a peek inside and see if I did anything silly when I put it together....

I don't have a bass with flats to try out, so I can't comment, but I really can't see any reason why it would make any difference in the octave effect.

Maybe you have a problem where the octave just isn't working at all, in which case we'd need to see some pics first to proceed. Just keep in mind, that the blend knob needs to be turned more in the clockwise direction to hear the octave effect.

I only mention the strings as in my experience of Overdrive/Distortion, they show much more of an effect on the treble side of things. That said, with the blend knob clockwise I'm getting plenty of distortion, but in this position, the texture effect is very difficult to discern. There seems to be a vague bass boost, but it is most pronounced on the D string...

I will try and attach images in a moment, but wonder if you can highlight the area of the circuit (in the cct diagram) responsible for the octave effect?

Many thanks in advance

Look at the circles, the straight line was an accident. Those pads look like they don’t have any solder at all. I’d add solder and reflow all of the dodgy looking joints.

You should just reflow all of the solder joints on your PCB. You've probably got a cold joint somewhere in the octaver portion of the circuit.

Guidance for that process here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=52188

Thanks folks

I’m quietly confident of my soldering, though it didn’t look great in the fuzzy photo I took. I’ve reflowed the joints, reassembled the pedal, and now only the blend works, no octave at all!

But my eyesight clearly is letting me down, so I’ve ordered an illuminated magnifying glass and when it arrives I’ll take another look. I’m sure we’ll get there....

Excellent. I use jewelers glasses I got off amazon for cheap. The older I get the smaller the pads get.

My eyes seem to be fine, but my arms are too short.

......and having previously reflowed all the soldered pads, I found one of the electrolytics in the centre of the board had a bridged connection. Cleaned up....and back where we started. Blend works, barely discernible change in texture. Im back to thinking that the circuit is operational, but just not doing what I would expect. I’m fine with swapping components if need be, can anyone suggest where I might start to create more variance in the effect? Could just as easily be less distortion as more octave....I’m just not getting the purpose of the second pot.

Do like the new lamp though....

So on a guitar, the octave begins to be heard at the twelfth fret and above, and particularly pronounce with the neck pickup and treble rolled of a bit. On a bass I would imagine you'd have to get pretty high up the neck to hear it.

On the other hand, there usually are some ring-mod like effects when playing more than one note below the twelfth - you should be able to hear those?
