I guess it's possible that's the solution? I will say that I pretty much have to dime the volume on the pedal itself to get it on par with the other pedals. I don't think that's it though. It doesn't sound anything like the demo. It sound VERY dirty, and it will NOT play nice with other pedals at all. It sounds like I have it on the maximum drive all the time, even at the minimum settings. And it's dipping too, which I assume is the germanium being pushed too hard.

Two things:

  1. Are you certain that all three transistors are properly oriented in their respective sockets?
  2. If so, you might try swapping the transistor positions around and see if it alters the behavior of the pedal.

they appear to all be inserted correctly.

Good. Try #2 then, please.

I'm going to try that tonight. In the meantime, does anything pop out to you as incorrect based on the pictures?

What happens when you tweak the bias trimpot?

When I go counterclockwise, it's so overloaded that when you hit nearly anything it dips volume and breaks up very badly. In the middle it's somewhat functional.

well, I took it apart from the casing, which meant that I had to cut the AC wires. I figured I could just hook it to a battery, but now I can't get it to work at all to test it. It will bypass when it's switched off, but won't light the LED when it's on. I have the red and black battery connections hooked correctly.

I'm getting frustrated. :(

We've all been there. It is incredibly frustrating when you're troubleshooting, and every time you try something new, you get your hopes up, and then it doesn't work… again. Honestly, the best advice I have for those times is to put it down for a day. Take a walk, read a book, get your mind off it.

Meanwhile, did you try the transistor swap duhvoodooman recommended?

Yeah, but I couldn't get the pedal to make any sound with a battery hooked up. I have no idea why it wouldn't work with a battery.

Oh, I see what you mean now, sorry I misunderstood.

The battery snap connects power to the circuit board through the DC jack, so it won't work as long as those wires aren't connected. If you want to, you can connect them without mounting the DC jack into the enclosure until you get it figured out. Those connections are some of the trickiest ones to make when you're starting out.

Well, I got the pedal to light up when I reconnected the sleeve tip and battery lines. No sound though.

If you don't have all 3 transistors seated perfectly, will the pedal work? It's possible that I screwed that up somehow in moving them all. I worry a bit that I'm just breaking things now.

Did you connect all three wires to the DC jack, or just two?

If they're not seated correctly, that will cause problems, yes. Do they appear to be dangling loose?

One other thing you could check, that I can't tell from your photos, is the placement of the 470Ω resistor vs. the 4k7 resistor. I have reason to believe this is NOT the issue, but I just can't tell for sure from your photos, and it's easy enough to check. So do check those color bands, please.

I checked all the resistors. I was suspicious of that as well.

Good. And the DC jack wires?

Yeah. I redid the jack wires. It'll turn on, but I can't get sound.

I'm going to send it in to a guy. At this point, my frustration level is near capacity, and I'm not even sure that I didn't have the pedal correct in the first place.
