Hey Friends,

Recently built a Large Beaver Ram’s and seems to work fine, except the LED does not light up. Desoldered it, dropped in a new one, making sure the orientation was correct; same issue. Was able to test the diode with a DMM and it lights up fine.

My guess is maybe I burned out one of the pigs on the switch?

Pics attached; any insight would help, thx!

Andy

It's most likely a bad solder joint. Have you traced out continuity to ground from the cathode with your multimeter? Have you tested for voltage at the anode?

I have not. While I do have decent build experience, I'm pretty novice at troubleshooting.

Other than this video for checking continuity: https://youtu.be/XRFtlUn4eBg?t=604, are there any other useful vids for testing voltage at the anode?

Thanks for the help!

You'd test the voltage at the anode the same way you'd test any other 9VDC voltage. Make sure it's set for DCV and not ACV. If it's not autoranging, make sure it's set as close to 9V without going under (usually 20VDC). Touch the black probe to ground. Touch the red probe to the square LED solder pad.

Then set the meter to test for continuity. Touch one probe to the round solder pad. Touch the other to ground. Also make sure the foot switch is in the "on" or "engaged" position. If the meter doesn't beep, start working your way backwards. Keep one probe on the cathode pad. Then touch the other probe to the "1" eyelet. Then to solder lug 1. Then to solder lug 2. Then to eyelet 2.

Thanks for the tips! Really appreciate it.

I did successfully test 9V on the anode, so good there.

It looks like I fried the lug 1 (top left of switch), so I guess I'll order a new switch.

I also figured out that I had the ground wire reversed on the Input jack, so I fixed that too.

More to come!

Andy
