Welp. I went and did it. In a huge rarity for me, I not only bought a piece of gear brand new, but I did it practically on a whim. A friend of mine who is a professional jazz guitarist posted on Facebook, raving about this new 50w Boss amp he'd gotten and how it was the best small gig amp he'd ever owned. He had put his Quilter and his small Fenders on the shelf. And the best part: it was $199 brand new!

I had never heard of these amps at this point.

I went and played the Katana 50 at Guitar Center, and it really impressed me. But I wanted to buy it through a locally owned shop, where they were backordered. While I waited, I realized that the 100w combo had a number of features the 50w lacked, including the effects loops, the line out, the presence control, and (most importantly) the ability to use the Roland 5-button foot switch. So when the local shop sent me a message saying they had gotten the 100w in but the 50w was still in transit, I sprung for it. $329, still dead cheap for an amp this good. And it is good. I'm seriously blown away!

The clean channel is superb and takes pedals really well. The onboard effects are quite good, and I'm looking forward to connecting it to the software and seeing what the other 50 effects can do. The acoustic amp sounds quite solid and will be useable when I can't run direct at acoustic gigs. And the power attenuation works mint—it sounds great at every level, from 0.5w bedroom volume all the way up to 100w ear-crushing volume.

It's tons of fun.

Now I'm kinda wishing I could clone the foot switch (Roland GA-FC, $99 and backordered everywhere forever due to the popularity of these amps), but it seems to have a lot of mysterious (to me) digital stuff going on.

Glad to gear you're likin' it, Scott! Sounds like a super-flexible amp.

Be careful about getting rid of the tube amp. There have been lots of digital/solid state guitar amps where people are very impressed at first, but after awhile the excitement wears off and they go back to the old standard tube amps. Of course, not all tube amps were great, but the ones that have passed the test of time are usually keepers.

I fell down the rabbit hole on this, and went to try one today (all they had was the 50W combo). Damned impressive. Damned loud. I'm looking into picking up the 100W head version soon..

Hahaha, awesome. The head is really cool—I love how it has a built in speaker for practice. It also adds Midi functionality, although I have no need of it.

I pulled the trigger on the 100W head, arriving soon.. 8) 8) 8)

quick speaker question - my cab situation is this:

cab 1: 1x12"/30W/16 Ohm Celestion G12H anniversary ceramic
cab 2: 1x10"/30W/16 Ohm Weber blue pup alnico

I run them in parallel at 8 Ohms.. is this reasonably safe for the Katana 100W Head? I probably won't ever run them full-tilt, but I do want to gig with them at a pretty good volume.

Wasn't ever a problem with my Tweaker 15W head, but this thing gets LOUD. Am I mostly safe?

Thanks!

I have no idea the answer to your question, but the folks at the Boss Katana group on Facebook will know. I sent you a friend request, and if you accept it, I can add you to the group. (I believe it's invitation only.)

Can't wait to hear how it works out!

Manual says 8 ohms or higher, so you should be good.

Man, this thing is no joke.. the cleans are gorgeous and quite tube-like in response, and at a headroom/volume level that's way beyond anything I could get from my Egnater Tweaker (which I've officially sold now). I put it up against a Peavey Classic 50 & a Deluxe Reverb recently, and I was able to dial it in where it was quite close enough for my needs.

The crunch channel is really doing it for me as far as gain goes, and the 55 pedals included in the software editor are a really super addition. It also takes 'actual' pedals really well, but I'm embarrassed to say I could see gigging with this amp and no pedalboard  I'd still use pedals and a mic'd cabinet for serious recordings though, I'm not that crazy.

Man, +1 to just about all of that. I'm about to put my Tweaker on the block. Mind if I ask what you got for it? PM me if you prefer.

I got the GA-FC foot switch, and it adds a ton of versatility for live playing. I actually think it does make it gig worthy without a separate pedalboard, at least for most applications.

Welcome to the club!

I tried a 100w Boss Katana when I was looking at guitars last week because of sjaustins review (and purchase), certainly a very versatile amp with tons of features. Amazing they can do that for so cheap! Way to go Boss.

I got $300 shipped for mine on Reverb. Unfortunately, shipping cost me $60 though, so take that into consideration..
