New Pedal Board Day!

Awesome new Schmidt Array 450-MS3 (serial number 0001!). These things are not cheap but worth every red cent. Built like a tank and nearly perfectly thought out. A couple of other shout outs:

  • After more than 50 days waiting, the Ethos is on-board and it is astoundingly great!
  • Want granular delay? (Yes, you do). Red Panda Particle delivers in SPADES.
  • No-see-um ('cause it's underneath) is the new Keeley Compressor Plus. I guess Keeley finally heard a BYOC 5 Knob!
  • Also underneath: BOSS BD-2W and an MXR Iso Brick for power.
  • Managing it all is the fabulous BOSS MS-3. Great effects, great switching.

This is a compact, robust, and hugely powerful system that sounds exactly how I want. Finally.

Mike

Awesome! Really been wanting to try one of those H9's. Does it fulfill all your modulation needs?

Well, a lot of them for sure. The Particle gives me something unique which the H9 could provide but doesn't. Some things on the MS-3 are unique as well. But between these three I've got it covered!

*EDIT* BTW, the H9's audio quality is exceptional. Obviously, there's ADC-DAC involved so you could worry about that. If you have a Strymon pedal, or have played one, you know that they sound terrific with no artifacts and nothing overtly digital sounding. The H9 sounds a little bit better to my ears, so quite good indeed.

Here's a shot with the top up. The Nux thingy is cool: a TRS cable from the MS-3's CTRL OUT goes into the CTRL IN and you can control two pedals with the FS-7 footswitch. What that means is that I can control FOUR external pedals instead of the normal three. Cool! STill a little messy, I have to build some more cables and route them better:

The MS-3 is really good. Effectively a GT class multi-effects plus the loop switcher plus a tone of control over just about everything. Super cool.

Here is the latest incarnation, *almost* done. Will replace (begrudgingly) the BD-2w with the Crown Jewel once I finish it.

Some explanation is in order, I think. The signal flow is in > ms-3 > out, but that is a *huge* oversimplification. Depending on the patch, I can control a range of effects and pathways for some awesome versatility. Loop 1 (L1) has the NUX looper, L2 has the Ethos, and L3 has the Red Panda Particle. The NUX looper switches between the Keeley and the BD-2w and its Control IN is connected to the Control OUT of the MS-3.

So for example, my homey patch has L1 assigned to the 1 switch on the MS-3 so I can have the NUX in or out; if it is IN the FS-7 controls whether the comp is on or the OD is on. Nice! L2 is always on in this patch because I love the sound of the Ethos. L3 is assigned to switch 2 of the MS-3 so I can bring the Particle in to taste. Switch 3 is assigned to an internal chorus, and Switch 4 turns a delay on and off. The expression pedal is assigned to volume and I can tap the tempo of the patch BPM that controls chorus speed and delay time.

There's a lot more to this little rig, suffice to say that I can find pretty much whatever I need out of it. Color me ecstatic!
