Both of these woods have unique sounds and I love them in their own unique way.

While I'm on the subject of woods, I also love the sound of swamp ash and alder too. Even mahogany has a unique beautiful sound.

It's amazing how wood can influence the sounds. Nature and sound.

I love tonewoods! I've spent quite a bit of time researching their tonal qualities.

The way i explain it is that tonewoods sort of fall into 3 main categories-
Soft woods which we use only for tops, which are pine trees like spruce and cedar.
Medium woods like mahogany, sapele, koa, and blackwood, can be used for tops, backs and sides but not so much for fretboard and bridges.
Harder woods like ebony, rosewood and maple that are good for fretboards, necks and bridges but can be used for backs, sides, necks, bodies, ect.

As a rule of thumb, harder or more dense wood is brighter because it will vibrate less than a softer wood, this can be subjective and depends on construction and thickness. Most woods used in guitars fall into these categories, or some variation.

Also in orchestras, wood is everywhere. The violins, piano, percussion. It's all wood.

The horns are brass though. It's the sound of metal. Not heavy metal though.

That would be the tuba...

And would that make the contrabass heavy wood?

Or a piano? That's heavy metal AND wood....and I do mean HEAVY!!

I used to work summers for a moving company when I was in HS and college, and you haven't experienced life to the full until you and 3 other guys lug an upright piano up a flight of narrow basement stairs....
