Hi all,

Anybody have experience with speaker cabinet simulators? I'm looking for something lightweight and small for my fly rig. No load necessary, just something to tap off the direct out on my new Quilter 101 Reverb (which, by the way, TOTALLY rips. never thought I would ever buy a SS amp...)

Thanks in advance!

A/DA GCS-2 Cabinet Simulator and DI Box - about a hundres bux, the size of a normal pedal and it sounds great. Uses resonant filters to simulate the speakers instead of IR. Very organic my "fly" rig (I DON'T fly to any gigs!) has this and a Quilter 101 on a mini pedal board. Just need a cab!

Oh that's great, you even have the same rig as me so I know it'll sound good :D

Impulse Response, it's the technology used in most speaker sims: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impulse_response

Awesome, this is great info. I did some more research into the ADA boxes and found this one: http://www.adaamps.com/Products/ada-GCS/GCS5.htm

It looks a little more spendy, but it takes phantom power, which will allow me to travel without carrying one more power supply. Also looks like there are a few other features that will make it handy on the road.

Thanks again for the recommendation!

Oh man, if that was available when I was buying I would have been all over it. Same features but added really useful stuff. Great buy!

My GCS-5 came in the mail and I've been playing around today with it, recording a mic'd cab and the cab sim into Logic. I played around with settings and was able to get a reasonable impression of my usual cabinet. Doesn't compress quite the same as a cab but... not bad for something that fits in my gig bag!

Just a word of warning mmarsh, if you do decide to upgrade: when they say "phantom power compatible", all they mean is that it won't explode if you connect phantom power to it. You can't actually power it via phantom :| looks like I'll be carrying around an extra wall-wart. Still, better than hauling a cab!

Thanks again for the tip!

Aaawww, I was sort of counting on that phantom supply :( still, looks like a great unit! Have you tried a little compression on the signal to sim cab compression? That might help a little with the feel...

MMarsh and WMarsh, I found your discussion interesting and went to the ADA site to do a bit more reading on the GCS line...
Have you guys seen this yet?

Yes, thanks, cool solution if you require stereo! I wanted something small for a pedalboard that would include my Quilter 101 (also pedal board size). The idea was a small pedalboard that I could just hook to a PA for café gigs. It worked and sounded good, But I replaced it with my current small pedalboard/small tube amp rig.
