Sending beta kits out today. This is where we'll be discussing the forthcoming updated Phase Royal.

Is this beta test something I didn't hear about? Or did Keith just accidentally post this where I could see it?

I doubt that it was an accident. I think Keith wants feedback on the new kit (which will certainly contain improvements/upgrades over the current one) to be available for reading by the "buying public."

Anybody want to bet against jimilee being the first customer of the new Phase Royal kit upon commercial release??

If that's the case, then this is me with my hand up. My address is in the database.

Um, nope. You can't make odds good enough for me to make that bet!

BYOC put out a Facebook call for a few beta testers last week. Supposed to build then discuss here.

Ah, that explains it. I have been living in a post-Facebook bliss since August.

Here's a demo of the prototype from 9 months ago. We were very close to releasing it, but then I decided that it absolutely needed a rate expression pedal input, so there was some redesign. It will look and function exactly like it does in the demo, it just has an expression pedal jack now. Here's a pic of what the enclosure will look like. https://www.facebook.com/buildyourowncl ... =3&theater

So far we've got 4-stage JFET, 8-stage JFET, 4-stage OTA, 8-stage OTA, and 4-stage optocoupler modules. The beta kits are only coming with 4-stage JFET modules. We'll be working on adding a 4-stage incandescent bulb module and maybe a 2-stage JFET (phase45) module.

How did I not get a personal invite to be a beta tester???? I’m not a facebookian but, it’s common knowledge I am the phaser connoisseur.

I'd say that's why. Wait till you see the OTA module though, some interesting stuff had to happen for the LFO to play nicely. I'm excited for this kit. It has been in the basement lifting weights and drinking protein shakes for something like a year or so now, probably longer. It's almost ready to pop out and kick some ass. If you're somewhat disappointed now, you won't be when everything is ironed out, and I'm sure you'll find yourself with a kit one way or another

Boom, totally stoked, almost frightened now. I’m not sure which guitar to use.

Will us V1 owners get a discount on the V2 kit?

As I understand it, that was one of the main objectives in this new kit.

The input output pots are the solution to the distortion problem.

And a charge pump for increased headroom.

Just did a quick parts check for the PR kit and came up with the following issues…

*Main PCB
Missing 3.3K & 1M resistors.
Missing 2x 10pf caps but kit came with 2x 47pf
Board calls for 1x 10K and 2x 100K trim pots but kit came with 3x 25K trim pots.

*Secondary PCB
Missing 15K & 3.9M resistors.
Missing 250K trim pot.

Unless the substituted parts are OK to use I have all the missing values needed to complete the build.

OK, I give up. How do you make the connections to the expression pedal jack?

Wire the ground connection to the sleeve.

And then, I’m guessing if you want the speed on the exp pedal, wire P to the tip. The CV and V+ are probably if you want depth on the pedal. I’d guess tip & ring, respectively.

I believe it’s an either/or sort of deal.

I’m going to need 3x 250K trim pots.

See page 7 of the build guide regarding the resistor issues I ran into. See page 13 regarding the 10pf/47pf caps. Also see page 15 regarding the issue with the trim pots.

Sorry. I didn't provide the link to the instructions. Hopefully the wiring diagram clears this up.

You can probably get away with using the 100k and 10k trimpots just fine. The 250k and 25k tend to be set more towards the center, which is always preferable. You'll probably find yourself needing to set the 100k and 10k more towards full turn.

As for setting the trimpots, this is my advice:

1. Set all the trimpots at center rotation.
2. Turn the rate knob full turn clockwise (as fast as it will go)
3. Slowly adjust the upper limit trimmer till you begin to notice the rate of the phasing begin to slow down.
4. Turn the rate knob full turn counterclockwise (as slow as it will go)
5. Slowly adjust the lower limit trimmer till you begin to notice the rate phasing begin to speed up.

You may need to repeat this a few times till you find the perfect equilibrium as the two trimmers have an effect on one another. Think of it like tuning new strings on a guitar with a Floyd Rose - you have to repeat the process until the bridge is properly tensioned.

Repeat the same process for your expression pedal. Your expression pedal should have its own lower limit trimmer. If your expression pedal has its own upper limit trimmer, stet the phaser's trimmer full turn clockwise and use the trimmer on the expression pedal to adjust the upper limit.
