You ever stare at a guitar online for, like, years? I've wanted this Gretsch 12-string electric (G5422-12 in walnut stain, to be exact) for as long as I can remember. I tried to scratch the itch several years back with a Danelectro 12-string that I'm pretty sure I bought from Morgan, but it just didn't do it for me. (Plus they're ugly. There, I said it.)

Bandmates and I are toying with the idea of doing a side hustle as a Tom Petty tribute act, which got me looking again. I considered the Ibanaez Artcore 12: cheaper, but out of stock at Sweetwater. My rep said they weren't coming back until mid-2023. Not quite for me anyway. There were only two of the Gretsch 12s left at that point, so I just went and did the thing.

It's amazing! Photos can't possibly do justice to an instrument like this. It chimes and sings through my AC15 like nobody's business. I used it on a song I wrote that I've been playing on acoustic, and everyone immediately said I can never not play it on the 12-string again. I might even go back and re-track it for the album we're finishing.

And now one of the great selloffs of my guitar-playing career is underway to pay for it before I owe any interest on my Sweetwater card.

OK, enough talk, here's a couple photos that you skipped to anyway.

That's great! Are those old-school low-output humbuckers? That's probably perfect for a 12. Have fun with it.

Thanks, and no, not just yet. I will finish December 2023. Meanwhile, life goes on and music gets made! (slowly)

They are Gretsch's new FT-5E Filter'Tron Humbuckers, their latest attempt at recreating the classic Gretsch double coil pickup for the second-tier line. I've had other versions as well. These sound great to my ear!
