In December, I finished grad school (again), and I decided to treat myself to a new guitar that I'd been eyeing for a good long while, the Jason Isbell Custom Telecaster. This is an interesting guitar for Fender: it's a "Custom Shop" model, but it's made in Mexico. It is based on Isbell's Custom Shop master-built Telecaster, road worn, double bound, nitro finished… it's a very very good guitar. It's more than I usually spend on a guitar, and I'm not even that into Teles. But Isbell is a musical hero of mine, both as a guitarist and (especially) as a songwriter, and it just seemed like the right time.

Here's the photos!

Fun fact: when Jason Isbell played on Jimmy Kimmel recently, he went into a local guitar store and took one of these models off the wall and went and played it on national TV. And this is a guy who has A LOT of truly amazing instruments. (Watch this video for a look at them.) Video of that performance:

Sweet Tele, Scott!! 8)

Isbell is a fantastic guitarist, singer & songwriter. Saw him and the 400 Unit a few years back here in Albany--great show! His other guitar player, Sadler Vaden, is great, too.

Worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu4BOBJwndI

Congrats on the graduate degree! What's was your field of study?

Thanks, Bob. And yes, Sadler is great! When I saw them here in Rochester last week, they had a couple songs where they traded solos and just went wild. Very fun to watch.

This degree was a master of science in mental health counseling. So now at 46 years old, I get to work an entry level job for a couple years while I pursue my private practice license. Keeps me feeling young, I guess?

Haha, no. That would be a lot more lucrative. I have a master of divinity and a master of science in mental health counseling.

The degree. The axe. The life. All the very best, Scott.

Scott, I liked the black pickguard on that guitar so much that I swapped out the white pearloid one on my Classic Vibe '60s Custom Telecaster for a black 3-ply. Not trying to fool anybody that it's the Isbell model, I just like the look. Plus it says Squier on the headstock, so nobody is going to mistake it for that one anyway! Take a look-see:

I'm not familiar with either one of those but I know it takes dedication and work so it's impressive to me.

I'm a fan! Cool swap, and that CV model is a heck of a good guitar too. The Rhett Shull Telecaster shootout includes a Classic Vibe, not that any of us didn't already know about the value prop on them.

Thanks, Scott. This was the second Squier CV guitar I ever bought; got it off eBay in 2011 for a tad over $300, in excellent shape. The neck is fantastic, and I've done quite a few mods to it, including upgraded pickups (a Broadcaster bridge and Twisted Tele neck) with 4-way switching and Gotoh compensated brass saddles. Sounds great and plays like butter.
