So with my arm injury I can cut but now to pull the coating off the wire is a big no no. Are there wire cutters that do the pulling of the coating for you? anyone used them?

I've seen a few potentials on line but I'm looking for some testimonials.

Yes, they do make an automatic wire stripper. They are great. The only problem is that 24awg is as thin as they go and if it's thinly coated, or they skimp on the strands, it might not work. Also, you have to feed about at least 1/2" into it for it to have something to grab onto. It can strip less than that, but it needs at least that much length to work. So if you need to strip really short pieces, it won't work. Aside from that, they work great. I used one for years. I had a few pairs. I seemed to have lost them all though.

Like these. Say they are only good down to 22AWG, but I've found they will work with most 24AWG.

Thanks Keith. i know what you mean with thinly coated wire as I used to have some. The wire I have now may work. worst case is I return it to HD!

So I bought Keith's stripper but the hole was too big and was not consistent . I have since bought Bob's stripper and the hole is perfect so all is well.

+1 for Bob's Stripmaster, I liked mine so much, I bought the next size up for bigger wires! The only down side is that there's a small skill issue related to how much wire you want to strip - you have to control that manually, unlike some auto-strippers (i.e. my Greenlee 45000) that can be set for fixed depth.

FYI, I only own the Greenlee because a former employer forced me to purchase it. It works OK, but makes ugly-looking strips on wire bigger than 18AWG, and sometimes just fails to strip at all if the adjustable tension is set too low. Never had an issue with my Stripmasters, though

If you're on a tight budget, the classic Kleins from the big orange store work well, but are obviously more manual. They do have a nice, sharp cutter built in though!

Very true on how much wire to cut. You sort of get in a groove and I recognize it quicker the more I use it. A few times it got off center and I totally snipped the end of the wire. But with a torn up bicep I needed something that does the heavy work for me. I'll get more consistent as I go and I won't go back to the old yank off the coating method.
