Build Your Own Clone Message Board

Somebody asked me to do a Buzzaround build for them, so I modified my Tonebender layout to accommodate it. It's kind of a fun pedal. High gain and wild.

The gut shots didn't come out great. I'll take another photo later.

Of course your CLR is surface mount.

Actually, there are two CLRs.

The board has one as well. I only need a resistor in one of them, but then I have to jumper the other. I decided to split the difference and put a resistor in each spot.

It's standard center negative. I added a voltage inverter circuit because so I don't have to bother with special power supplies or cables.

You mean graphically? I did the artwork in Adobe Illustrator and then laser etched it.

Yeah, we have an Epilog Mini18. They are not cheap, but are good machines.

Make sure you factor in a budget for a good inline fan and the required ventilation. We had to run ductwork.

so I guess those cheap ones made in china won't burn the paint off of an enclosure?

I would've loved to have found a cheaper machine, but I find the cheap Chinese machines insufficient for my needs.

One of the guys on Madbean's forum bought one and upgraded a lot of parts (in particular the controller board) and he seems to like it (after quite a lot of effort).

Beautiful Dave. I really like the graphics.- positive/negative space, and all that.
I've built a couple of Buzzarounds, but was never really sure if I got them sounding right. Sort of like a "broken" Mk3?
I'm assuming the fourth knob is a bias?

Yep, the balance is basically a bias control. The original didn't have a volume control so people used that as a basic vol control, which is unfortunate. Having a real volume control helps a lot.

I can't say that mine really sounds like a broken Mk3. It's not the smoothest of fuzzes, but neither is the Mk3.

Q1 gotta have real low hfe. Like 50ish, Q2 around 78 and Q3 134ish. I have achieved nice results with this.

I've found the "formula" for MkIIIs has to do with the whole Darlington set up for Q1 and Q2. Basically, add up the Q1 and 2 hfe, and make sure that doesn't exceed your gain for Q3. That way the main fuzz stage at Q3 isn't getting hit so hard that it muds up or gets overly fuzzy. The math on geekmacdaddy's works out just right. Also, lower leakage on Q1 and 2 and higher leakage on Q3 sounds best to my ears. This seems to be the thing for Buzzarounds as well, although I haven't built my own. I have one made by Ghost Effects, and it's quite a musical sound despite the aggression; probably a little less gain than the MkIII I built. Really loud though! The balance control may be odd by today's standards but it works as advertised.
