So a couple of y'all are already in on the gag.

A few weeks ago, I was having lunch at the brewery where Mrs. Magnet works as the executive chef and one of the reps for their distributor was also having lunch (as he frequently does). He told me that he'd seen a used DS-1 for $3 and asked if there was anything I could do with it should he pick it up. I said sure and asked if he had anything in mind. He said not really but might be interested when I'd done... whatever with it. So with the agreement that he'd get first right of refusal when I finished, it was placed in my hands the following day.

On my way home, I had an idea that I simply had to run with. I don't normally like making straight clones of this particular effect but given the hype around it and the (I feel) misplaced disdain for BOSS products inside certain cork-sniffing circles, I get a giggle out of subverting that.

The trick for me on this one was working out a True Bypass scheme which would preserve the BOSS footswitch. After some research, I came across this article by R.G. Keen which was the basis for the circuit I used. From there, off to Eagle I went and Friday night goodies from OSH Park arrived at my door.

May I present the DS-1 Unobtanium Mod (rip out the BOSS guts and stick a True Bypass Klone into it):

There were some SNAFUs, however, to be explained in a subsequent post.

Long story short, I had to make a few parts from scratch in Eagle (the SMD hex inverter, relay, and the DC plug) and two of the three didn't work 100% right. The plug I got in by breaking off the switching lug (which I wasn't going to use anyway) and filing down one of the remaining legs. The relay, however, I had the wrong pinout. Turns out the common lug on a 2 Form C relay isn't what you'd expect based on a DPDT switch and not all datasheets are as clear on that as one might hope.

Regardless, perfboard, hot glue, and shrink wrap came to the rescue and I was able to salvage the build.

For anyone who's interested, I'm planning on releasing the CAD file as a 99Zulu project once I've fixed my parts and made a few other small adjustments.

Also, if anyone has any ideas, I'm considering doing more 99Zulu layouts that will fit in a BOSS enclosure with the same switching scheme.

I love this so much. I have no issue with most Boss pedals, but the DS-1 is really awful IMO. So this is a huge upgrade!

I bet the Boss switch would work with some of the relay bypass systems that are out there these days, not sure how different they are from what's on your PCB.

I think the gist of (most of) them is simply creating a temporary short to ground.

I mainly went this route because I don't want to get into programming things.

A "pre-release" link, by the way, in case anyone's interested.

I still haven't posted this on my Tumblr page because it's not 100% verified quite yet (I haven't been able to source suitably cheap enclosures to work with) and I want to do a little bit of a build document but I'm 99.99% sure these boards work as designed.
